The first of two new 2024 Lexus SUVs is a revamp of the sturdy but long-in-the-tooth GX. The all-new GX 550 rides on the same platform as the LX 600 for improved on- and off-road handling. It’s powered by a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 that makes 349 hp and 479 lb-ft. of torque, has full-time 4WD, and comes in a rugged new Overtrail grade. A hybrid model is in the works too.

Depending on trim, the new GX is 3.74" to 4.52" wider and 2.75" longer than the outgoing model, and has a big, bold, and boxy new look that reflects its adventurous demeanor. The Overtrail grades rolls on 33" all-terrain tires wrapped around 18" wheels, while the Premium and Luxury versions have 20" or 22" alloy rims.
There's also a new 10-speed, direct-shift automatic transmission, and the Overtrail grades get an electronically-locking rear differential to help improve traction and stability. It can tow up to 8000 pounds in the Premium/Premium+ and Overtrail/Overtrail+, and 6780 to 6990 pounds in the Luxury+ and Luxury variants.
And if you had any questions about the GX's off-road chops, the Overtrail grades get tech like Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, 3D Multiterrain Monitoring, and a Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.
It's also got the latest Lexus technologies, including a 14" multimedia touchscreen running the in-house-developed Lexus Interface. It also includes Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, with features like Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Proactive Driver Assist, and more. Optional tech includes a 20-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, Traffic Jam assist, a head-up display, and Digital Key functionality. A cooler box and cold package storage area are also available.
Pricing has yet to be announced for the 2024 Lexus GX 550, and Lexus says the SUV will go on sale in early 2024.
