Process X takes us inside the Gunma Daruma factory, makers of these hollow, round dolls since 1873. They’re cast from a slurry of recycled egg cartons and paper, smoothed, air-dried, and then handpainted in red, black, white, and gold.

When is a fire extinguisher not a fire extinguisher? When it’s designed to stoke a flame instead of putting it out. Ollari’s took an empty old fire extinguisher, polished off its paint, and sliced it down the middle – turning its bottom half into a grill and its top half into its lid. The chainlink hinges are a clever design touch.

The guys from Corridor Crew are usually wowing us with their visual effects work. But in this video, they took a break from creating art with computers and broke out real canvases to take a painting lesson from Bob Ross. But instead of acrylics or oils, they painted their happy little scenes with sauces and condiments. We can only imagine how the studio smelled after this.

Small vehicles, known as tuk-tuks, are popular in many places around the world. Atom Things takes us on a tour of Tez Raftar, a factory that builds these auto rickshaws. The production process includes welding together a steel frame, fitting and painting body panels, and installing a drivetrain, electrical system, windshield, cargo bed, and seats.

We’d probably slice a finger whittling a pencil with an X-Acto knife. Artist Bobby Duke gave that a try before moving on to a rotary tool. He then proceeded to carve a snake wrapped around the pencil’s lead. After a bit of precision painting and some silly sound effects, the tiny artwork was complete.

Artist Alain Biet created this mindblowing short film, which starts out with an artist painting an image of a pencil. As soon as he’s done with that one, more everyday objects start appearing and accumulating until the frame is completely filled. At first, we thought these color-coordinated LEGO habitats had been slathered with paint. But artist Dana Knudson built each entirely from same-color LEGO bricks. He had to remove some printing, otherwise, it’s 100% LEGO plastic. Beyond the Brick stopped by Dana’s display at Atlanta Brick Con for an up-close look at every scene.

This unique textile is made with special dyes and an arrangement of fibers that absorb 99.9% of visible light. James from The Action Lab got a spool of the fabric and turned his black car into a really black car.

The Ford Bronco Sport goes retro with its 1970s-inspired Free Wheeling special edition. Like those classic Free Wheeling trucks, vans, and Broncos, the compact SUV is decorated with red, orange, and yellow body stripes. It’s also got unique 17″ black and red rims, a silver painted grille, and its interior has colorful seat inserts with ombre stitching and red trim accents.

If you’ve ever curbed the rims on your car, you know how awful it can look. But with the proper equipment and expertise, it’s possible to repair damaged rims. Wheel Restore USA shows how their diamond cut wheel lathe can make even heavily damaged wheels look as good as new by removing a thin layer of metal. They also have a wheel-painting robot.

FIAT has stopped making grey cars. Why? Because they’re everywhere and that’s boring. As FIAT CEO Oliver Francois says, “Grey is not dolce vita,” alluding to the Italian way of living “the sweet life.” To prove he’s serious, Francois got into a 600e and had it dunked into an enormous can of orange paint.

We hate having random bits of hardware and spare parts lying around our garage. There are some pretty nice mechanics carts on the market, but we really love the one that Pask Makes custom-built for his workshop. He cut and welded it from steel, then finished it with a retro silver-green hammer finish paint.

Musician Nicolas Bras is known for inventing some truly unique musical instruments from off-the-shelf parts. With the reveal of the new 2024 Lexus GX 550, we figured there was no better time to take one final ride in the outgoing model, the GX 460. We spent a week living with this 2023 GX 460 Black Line special edition, slathered in beautiful Nori Green Pearl paint. Our conclusion: Lexus’ rugged and capable SUV leaves some big shoes to fill for the next-gen GX.

Artist Steven Richter has made some very impressive sculptures over the years. He did something different for this piece by replicating Drew Struzan’s poster art for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a three-dimensional sculpture. After casting the faces of the movie’s stars, he painstakingly replicated the painted light and shadow of the original image.

This shiny raccoon table lamp brings a little bit of nature indoors – without the risk of rabies!
