It’s been 15 years since Toyota fully redesigned the 4Runner, but it looks like it was worth the wait. The 2025 4Runner has a sharp, chiseled new look that matches the new Tacoma and two new engines – including a robust i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Rugged Trailhunter and deluxe Platinum grades join the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, and TRD Pro this time.
Engine options include a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft. of torque, or a hybrid powertrain that produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. of torque. The more powerful version can tow up to 6,000 pounds - a thousand more than the prior-gen 4Runner. Both drivetrains incorporate an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Riding on the same body-on-frame platform as the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia, the new 4Runner is ready for adventures on and off the tarmac. Configurations include 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD. The 4WD models get an electronic 2-speed transfer case, Active Traction Control, and an automatic limited-slip differential. TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades get an electronically locking rear diff for increased traction on rough terrain.
Our favorite configuration is the tricked-out Trailhunter, which comes from the factory ready to conquer off-road trails with its 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, Old Man Emu shocks with remote reservoirs, a high-mount air intake, skid plates, rock rails, RIGID LED fog lights, and a custom ARB roof rack. The Trailhunter also rides 2 inches higher in front and 1.5 inches higher in back than the base 4Runner.
