Awesome Short Films

(PG-13) “I’ve been to therapy four times now – I know how to articulate my feelings.” This may be the perfect line from Fast and Loose, a story about a millennial dude who gives and collects unwarranted advice and perpetuates the awkwardness of his intimate relationships.

(PG-13) Looks like Byron & Dave have hit the nail on the head about some of the people we have known in our past work lives. After watching this dark comedy about socializing outside the office, nothing pleases us more than to be self-employed.

Tristan Gion presents a super-short animated film featuring imagery of fantastical flying machines, boats, and other modes of transportation. The illustration is beautiful, but it’s the whimsical ending that really brings it all together.

Director Kangmin Kim’s stop-motion short film features some truly unique puppets, but despite its playful character design, this is no lighthearted family fare, as Kim attempts to recount a disturbing childhood rite of passage as a dark and surreal animation.

Writer, dancer and director Julie Gaultier gives us an extraordinary gift as she expresses her profound tragedy in the most gentle way in AMA, an interpretive underwater story. It’s almost as if we are holding our breath along with her. Silent and moving. (Thanks, Charles!)

Oleksii Sobolev’s Breathless tells the tale of a committed synchronized swimmer whose attempts to win the championship and her coach’s heart are flooded with the universal themes of love, jealousy, betrayal and liberation – all underwater. Dreamy and well, fluid.

Psst. Do you like geometric minimalism? how about simple sounds? The imaginative Kevin McGloughlin has given us the gift of Clunk – a one-and-a-half minute animated short with three cubes. We dare you to only watch it once.

The latest episode of Glenda, the Classiest Galaxy Tourist has sick rotoscoping. The live action scenes are from the B movie The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. The violence is still from Someone’s Ex’s soul. If the ending left you confused, watch Episode 2 again.

A mountain climber is panicking. He woke up in the middle of the night unable to find his tentmate. And all their rope. He goes to wake up the other climbers. Kabakon Film’s hilariously tense comedy makes good use of props.

Artist Izzy Burton’s short film follows one man’s journey through life using a series of beautiful environments and charming character animations. Rather than focus on details, it boils down its storytelling to some of the universal experiences we all share. Making of here.

Zurich-Based illustrator Anete Melece’s The Kiosk presents the charming tale of Olga, a large lady who makes the newsstand her home, until an absurd incident takes her on a fantastic voyage. Charming, kooky and colorful.

Director Gergely Wootsch’s award winning 2013 animated short is finally available online. The atmospheric black and white film tells the story of a hungry, undead man befriended by a pigeon in London’s Trafalgar Square. Voiced by Bill Nighy and Stephen Mangan.

MEL Films traveled to the distant Arctic outpost of Longyearbyen, Norway, the Northernmost city on Earth. It’s known for its natural beauty, and also the notion the area’s thick permafrost layer holds organic matter that could come back to life after it thaws.

(PG-13) “The most beautiful flowers grow on the edge of the ravine.” A young man working at an illegal food truck falls for a girl working at the brothel across their shop. Wes Anderson meets Nicolas Winding Refn in Noël Lozzen’s eye-popping short film.

(PG-13) A working woman trapped in the daily grind gets a much needed respite. She gets invited to a party that makes Burning Man look like a trip to the library. A refreshing, beautifully animated feel-good short from a group of students at The Animation Workshop.

(Gore) Jessica Curtright and Santiago C. Tapia created this tense and brutal short horror film which starts out looking like a home invasion gone wrong, but quickly reveals itself to be something even darker and more insidious.

Director Adam Stern and Artifex Studios present a well-executed science fiction short film about an astronaut who tests out the very first faster-than-light spacecraft, but far exceeds the mission’s intended destination after a system malfunction.

(Mature themes) Sophie Markatatos expounds on universal themes of isolation and despair while offering glimpses of fleeting contentment when two random characters meet, in her colorfully animated short film How Are You Today?. Life is short folks – make it nice.

(PG-13: Language) “Sometimes, only sometimes. All the time would be too much. Never would be too little.” Near the end of the universe, a bear and a goose – both nigh-omnipotent – ponder what a better universe would be like, and decide to act on their ideas.

A man struggles to find his place in the world after a childhood incident left him disfigured. Can he find solace with a group of other outcasts? Be sure to stick around for the ending credits of this offbeat short film by Us. The making of documentary is worth a watch too.
