Awesome Fire

The PyroLance allows firefighters to spray water into a burning structure without having to break down doors, walls, or ceilings. It uses extremely high pressure to drill a hole into an adjacent space, then sprays a fine mist on the other side to reduce the temperature.

Grant “The King of Random” Thompson shows us how to build a cool looking light-up fountain that not only spins water around in an endless whirlpool, it has a bubbler that he rigged up with propane gas so the surface of the water lights on fire.

While working on the great Science Channel series Street Science, Darren Dyk of BeyondSlowMotion and Kuma Films teamed up to capture some amazing high-speed visuals of a fire tornado, including some fun footage of a toy car being flung through the blaze.

Warped Perception aimed his high-speed camera at a bottle lined with alcohol, then lit it so we could enjoy the fire inside in glorious slow motion. Then, he stepped things up to nitromethane – the same highly-explosive stuff used in dragsters. Kids, don’t try this at home.

You might have seen videos or guides online about the propane or MAPP gas gun. It emits a tiny fireball that goes through a tube before diffusing with a loud bang. The man who came up with the idea is Al Stahler, and now he’s taking orders for custom made Plasma Poppers.

Domino fanatic Kaplamino’s latest run doesn’t feature thousands of tiles falling down, but it does offer something pretty different – a series of chain reactions which kick off using matches, fireworks, and other pyrotechnic devices – and a bit more waiting around than usual.

A fire starter that works by ramming a small piston into a cylinder. This creates enough heat to ignite tinder or char cloth. Clickspring’s version is quite expensive, but it’s made in the USA out of aluminum and brass to ensure durability and a great fit. Skip to 2:47.

Primus’ Kamoto is a foldable fire pit and grill – great for places where it’s difficult or prohibited to have fire on the ground. Its wood/charcoal pit is protected from wind on the sides but is vented underneath. It also has an ash tray to keep the ground clear.

(PG-13) “These are fire trucks. And fire trucks are a-holes.” Peter Sripol spliced a remote-controlled fire truck with an off-road RC car and modded it to spit flaming gasoline. If you’re crazy enough to replicate this, at least have some water on hand.

The Mad Track Brothers put some flammable cargo on a Hot Wheels car, then let it loose to spin through numerous loops on their twisty Darda track. It’s a cool idea, but the best part is the long-exposure image they captured of the car’s fiery ride. More here.

Celluloid ping pong balls are known to be highly flammable, so there’s no wonder that this tube full of the balls goes up in a spectacular blaze of glory when subjected to the intense heat of carsandwater’s killer Red Hot Nickel Ball.

Thermite is some nasty stuff, but the extremely hot-burning material needs an ignition source around 3,000° F to get started. Grant Thompson decided to see if the solar light concentrator he built is up to the challenge of sparking a thermite blaze.

Oh the humanity! After spending an inordinate amount of time assembling this model of a F1 race car out of matchsticks, builder The Q burns it to the ground in seconds. It’s at once deliciously satisfying and totally wrong.

A dramatic way to warm up any backyard space, the Blaze gives you a portable outdoor fireplace complete with a chimney to direct smoke and ash, and a storage area underneath for spare logs. Made from sturdy 3/16″ steel, and weighs about 200 lb when fully assembled.

The Q shows us how to build a structurally-sound miniature house entirely out of wooden matchsticks, without any glue, then proceeds to burn it to the ground. Build one for yourself, and you’ll feel like a god as you control the fate of your tiny architectural creation.

After building a car engine we could see inside of, Warped Perception split some model rocket engines down the middle and sealed them under plexiglas so we can watch them ignite. We think an acrylic tube would burn more accurately, but it’s still awesome to watch.
