Awesome Weird

Animator Cyriak Harris takes us on a typically trippy journey through one of his weird and imaginative worlds. This time, the place is populated with self-replicating fractal teddy bears, spiraling highways, and cats operating mechs made out of buildings. As the insanity passes by, it eventually circles back on itself.

(PG-13: Language) A man and a woman get together over what appears a delicious brunch, and have a particularly outlandish conversation over croissants and orange juice. John Purcell’s nonsensical short film is unabashedly silly and offbeat.

There are a zillion covers of Billie Eilish’s hit Bad Guy out there, but we’re going to have to give our vote to Dan Davidson’s group DD and the Butterlovers and their bluegrass version. We have no idea what the deal is with their outfits, but we still say “yee-haw!”

Unofficial naturalist ZeFrank is here to educate us yet again on one of nature’s stranger creations, a funky fungi that rapidly develops and expands in some of the most extraordinary ways. Not only does it look disgusting, it smells the part too.

Artist Mike Pelletier’s experimental short film is an incredibly trippy visual created by tossing together a bunch of digital human models, removing their skeletal structures, and then dipping them in virtual paint. If it sounds weird, that’s because it is. We can’t help but think of the part of Terminator 2 where the T-1000 melts.

Musical mashup maestro Bill McClintock issues his apologies in advance for this hilariously weird melding of The Spice Girls and Slipknot, with a dash of The Black Crowes tossed in for extra seasoning. All we really want is to zig-a-zig-aaaaaaarrrrgh.

We already know that octopi are incredibly smart creatures. What we don’t know is if their big brains dream like ours. In this fascinating footage from Nature on PBS, we witness a octopus changing colors as she sleeps, while the narrator imagines what she might be dreaming about.

Described as “glassless cocktails,” scotch whiskey maker The Glenlivet’s uniquely packaged booze is sure to raise some eyebrows. Each edible pod is filled with a 23ml whiskey cocktail, offering up a burst of flavor much like taking a shot. While they’re a cool idea, they’re not headed to the US at this point.

The Q built one of the most insane custom bicycles we’ve ever seen. He replaced the standard wheels of his wide-tire bike with special rims that wear six shoes each instead of tires. It doesn’t look like the smoothest ride ever, but the shoe rubber does provide decent traction.

While the only moving parts on most skateboards are the trucks and wheels, Matt Tomasello wanted something more complex. So he set about building some wacky skateboards which can change form as he jumps off and back onto them. Matt shows off his wares and his trick skills in this compilation video from JENKEM.

Morgan of Seed Animation Studio gives us all the finger… actually lots of them, in this strange and hypnotic short film which turns human digits into some really unusual mechanical contraptions. At a certain point, they all started looking like hot dogs to us.

We’re not quite sure why we find this CGI simulation of noodles being tossed about so satisfying, but we do. Somebody needs to turn this into a video game where the objective is to transfer all the noodles from the bowl to the glass using only that fork. We’d pay at least $1.99 for that game.

With its twangy mouth sounds, Jew’s harp (aka “jaw harp”) is one of the stranger instruments out there. For the most part, it’s an instrument that’s played by one musician at a time, but this ensemble of 30 or so harp players in Russia occasionally gets together to perform as a group, and the layered sound they make is wild.

When it comes to Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips, we’ve come to expect the unexpected… This track from King’s Mouth is a story of a giant tot with a love for outer space, packing fat beats, analog squeals, and a psychedelic music video with special guest Fred Armisen. The album cut includes narration by Mick Jones of The Clash.

A 1/4-mile time of 15.495 seconds isn’t exactly earth-shaking. But this is no ordinary car – it’s a small building. Watch as Kevin Nicks‘ converted 1999 VW Passat with an Audi RS4 drivetrain manages to beat a Vauxhall Astra H in a drag race. When you make games that are as whimsical in nature as Nintendo, you’re bound to have some weird moments over the years. Nintendo fan Shiromi edited together a reel of some of the wackiest things that have happened to Mario, Link, and Kid Icarus and others over the years. Man, the 1990s were a strange time.

After explaining how we might just have a chance of surviving a dip in a swimming pool filled with sharks, the guys from What If are back to tell us if it’s safe to go back in the water, only the water has been replaced with the venom of hundreds of thousands of snakes.

A homeowner decided to use BriefCam’s Rapid Recap tech in his FLIR FX security camera to capture all of the activity that took place one morning in his front yard. The tech superimposes time-lapse images on a static background, providing a quick glimpse at a day’s activities, and some awesomely surreal video footage.

Researchers from Keio University in Japan have devised a wearable mechanical device that gives humans a moving, vertebrate tail. While it might look ridiculous, the air-powered appendage can be used to improve balance, much in the way that animals use their tails.

That expanding spray foam insulation can be really useful for filling gaps and cracks, but it’s also really nasty stuff. The King of Random decided to see if they could use a bunch of cans of Great Stuff to make usable (and really ugly) furniture. Somebody should try and build a house out of this goo.

Even if you get a personalized license plate from the government, it’s unlikely to cost more than $100. But as Half as Interesting explains, low plate numbers and hard to find words can sell for ridiculous amounts of money on the private market to insanely wealthy people with money to burn.
