Awesome Dragons

A king hires a freelance knight to take care of his dragon problem, but he just can’t satisfy his demanding boss. This amusing animated short by Luciano A. Muñoz Sessarego and Tumblehead might remind creative folks of what it’s like to deal with a client who doesn’t know what they want until they see it. (Thanks, Rob!)

Donny Chen, aka SleepyCow, is a master at making seemingly impossible LEGO creations. We’ve been wowed by his LEGO bicycle and LEGO Ideas grand piano. Donny’s latest creation is a mind-blowing golden dragon covered with 1300 scales and assembled from more than 6500 pieces. LEGO fan Ben Cossy takes a look at this artful dragon and explains how it was built.

British Colombia artist Kevin Stone creates large-scale metal sculptures. Among his works is this massive steel dragon inspired by Drogon from Game of Thrones. It took him two years to complete the 15,000-pound metal beast, which even breathes fire. Coolest Thing met the artist and got a look at some of his incredible works.

Bobby Duke has lots of different art skills. After finding a plastic dragon skeleton at a thrift store, he disassembled, traced, and replicated its parts using a 3D drawing pen. But he didn’t just stick with the original design – Bobby made his dragon much more badass. He used a wood-burning pen to smooth out the edges.

Ross the Random is back with another cool transformation video. This time, he took an ordinary steel spoon and turned it into a beautiful work of art. First, he carefully cut out a dragon pattern using a jeweler’s saw. Then, he used a grinder and file to turn its handle into a tiny sword. We love the blue finish he added with the torch.

Lena from aboxfullofstuff shows off Azure, an intricate dragon puppet she created with beautiful blue scales, horns, and details like moving eyeballs and smoke that comes out of its nostrils. We love how her costume has a fake left arm to conceal that her real arm is inside of the puppet.

Master chocolatier and pastry chef Amaury Guichon is back with another epic edible sculpture. This time, he created a detailed purple dragon that breathes dry ice “smoke” from its mouth. It’s an amazing build, but we couldn’t help but laugh at its phallic looks halfway through the build.

Artist Penny Thomson makes these amazing moving sculptures of birds, dragons, faeries, and other creatures. Each one uses a crank and precisely-placed stiff wires to bring it to life. Her works go up for sale on her Etsy shop from time to time, but they sell out almost instantly.

For more than 20 years, theater company La Machine has been building massive mechanical puppets that they march through the streets. During an April 2022 performance in Toulouse, France, their fire-breathing dragon-horse Long Ma Jing Shen teamed up with Asterion the minotaur to stare down a giant spider.

Minibricks is a master at model making. For their latest project, the created an incredible diorama featuring a tentacled sea beast swimming through an pool of clear resin. The piece, titled SUBNAUTICA conjures memories of The Shape of Water and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

What strange beasts dwell within your home? It turns out not just dust mites, but there be dragons among us. Sculptor David Lee Pancake makes these wall hangings that look like dragons are trying to crawl out of your HVAC system. The two little dragons inside have light-up eyes, so they look extra creepy at night.
