Awesome Fantasy

This limited series from the Game of Thrones universe is based on The Tales of Dunk and Egg, George R.R. Martin’s prequel novellas about Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, future King Aegon V Targaryen. The story takes place 100 years before GoT, and is clearly more lighthearted than the other shows. The six-episode run premieres 1.18.2026 on HBO Max.

Brian Fuller, the mind behind Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, directed this film about a 10-year-old girl who enlists the help of a hitman to slay the monster that she thinks devoured her family. The menacing Mads Mikkelsen stars as the unlikely monster slayer who feels guilty that assassins gunning for him might have been the ones who made her family disappear.

Les Bêtes is a dark, animated fantasy from Michael Granberry, inspired by the works of stop-motion animator Ladislas Starevich. It follows a mysterious rabbit who conjures bizarre creatures to amuse a wicked king and his depraved court. The award-winning short film’s character design, creepy environments, and twisted humor will pull you in and won’t let go.

If you haven’t watched the animated web series WiggleWood, it’s worth watching. Each bite-sized, pixelated episode features a bearded wizard and other fantasy characters as they navigate the everyday challenges of their world. This hilariously weird episode shows what happens when they rub a genie’s lamp.

The Plucky Squire is a wildly imaginative fantasy adventure and puzzle game where you play Jot, the hero of a storybook. When the book’s villain realizes that he’s fated to lose, they kick out Jot into the real world, kicking off the game’s conceit of switching between the 2D book and the 3D real world. Renowned artist William Stout and Art of Play follow up on their awesome Dinosaur playing cards with a deck inspired by the fantasy genre. All 54 cards in the box feature an imaginative, original illustration loaded with color and detail. While dealing out the cards, you’ll find a variety of dragons, bats, wizards, faeries, and other wondrous creatures.

The theme music from The Lord of the Rings is permanently ingrained in the minds of many a fantasy fan. Now hear it like it was meant to be played, thanks to flutist Paul Harvey, who performed the tune inside of a mile-long tunnel along a trail in Wisconsin. The acoustics add the perfect air of mystery.

RPGs and fantasy movies often send their characters on a quest for a mythical object. The Minute Hour and animator slouch take a jab at the trope with a cartoon about a man and his quest to capture an orb that possesses such mysterious powers that even we shall not understand them by the end of the video.

Disney+ and Lucasfilm revisit the magical world of Willow with a new TV series. Warwick Davis reprises his role as the unlikely hero in an epic battle of good vs. evil. The trailer looks wonderful, though we will miss Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan. Premieres 11.30.22.

Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger square off in this over-the-top fantasy adventure about a kung fu master who must escape his homeland to bring his daughter a special talisman that lets her control a dragon. It looks completely ridiculous, and we kind of just want to see it for the hairdos. Drops 11.20.2020.

Screen Junkies goes back to the ’80s to poke some fun at The NeverEnding Story, a childhood fantasy movie that’s loaded with imaginative imagery and the kind of darkness you’d expect when you hire the guy who directed Das Boot and Outbreak to make a kids movie.
