This Black Hole Could be Bigger Than The Universe

This Black Hole Could be Bigger Than The Universe

Kurzgesagt recaps some of the scientific speculations about black holes. They then explore a few thought experiments about these mysterious cosmic locations, leading up to a mind-blowing possibility. If physicists are correct and a black hole creates a universe inside it, then we could be inside a black hole, that’s inside a universe, that’s inside a…

Making a DIY Smokeless Fire Pit from Foam and Concrete

Making a DIY Smokeless Fire Pit from Foam and Concrete

Backyard fire pits are great but can blow smoke in your face. After building a smokeless fire pit a few years back, HAXMAN wanted to make a new version for his patio out of concrete. He bent sheets of XPS insulating foam to create two forms, then filled them with concrete. After building the structure, he drilled holes into a metal fire pit ring for ventilation.

You might think that pigeons are dumb birds that poop on statues, but these avians are so much more than their “rats with wings” reputation. So You’re Raising a Telekinetic Child

So You’re Raising a Telekinetic Child

After hearing Jon Spurney’s outstanding keyboard performance in the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, we visited his YouTube channel, where we stumbled onto this gem. His parody of 1970s educational films offers parents tips on what to do if their kid starts manipulating objects with their mind. Where is Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters when you need it?

SNL: Scooby-Doo

SNL: Scooby-Doo

Zoinks! Saturday Night Live and guest host Jake Gyllenhaal went completely off the rails with this parody of Scooby-Doo, making fun of the part where they rip the mask off the baddie, only to find it’s some old geezer under there. It’s the goriest sketch we can remember from SNL, but you have to remember this is the network that gave us Hannibal.

Donny’s Orange

Donny’s Orange

The following video was made with 100% Real Orange. Danny Sangra’s silly animated short pokes fun at the things that food and beverage producers do to trick consumers with their labeling. That’s Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna from Girls) as the voice of the concerned Orange.

Sculpting LEGO Zombies

Sculpting LEGO Zombies

LEGO has made a few zombie minifigures in recent years, which inspired Adam from North of the Border to sculpt his own from clay. Like most of his creations, his trio of LEGO zombies are much creepier than the official ones. We love that they’re undead versions of classic LEGO characters: the medieval knight, construction worker, and spaceman.

PMJ: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

PMJ: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

We bet you’ve never heard a song by The Smiths like this. Postmodern Jukebox and vocalist Ashley Campbell took Johnny Marr and Morrissey’s gloom-and-doom-filled 1986 track There Is a Light That Never Goes Out and gave it new life as something that could have been one of Marty Robbins’ old gunfighter ballads.

Building an Etch-a-Sketch Robot

Building an Etch-a-Sketch Robot

Drawing on an Etch-a-Sketch is challenging due to its simplistic horizontal and vertical control knobs. With the goal of presenting at the Open Sauce convention, Every Flavor of Robot put their thinking caps on, engineered a motor drive unit, and programmed it to draw uploaded images. All of the demos at the end are in real-time.

Retro Tech: Sony VT-M5 TV Audio Recorder

Retro Tech: Sony VT-M5 TV Audio Recorder

Before VCRs went mainstream in the late 1970s, there wasn’t a way to record TV programs at home. But if you were an audiophile with deep pockets, you might have had the Sony VT-M5 audioscope in your rack. Techmoan takes a look at this cool-looking but almost instantly obsolete device that was designed to record only the audio from broadcast TV.

Empire of the Sun: Music on the Radio

Empire of the Sun: Music on the Radio

The second single from Empire of the Sun’s new album Music on the Radio is as good as nu-disco gets. The Aussie duo describes the smooth and groovy track as “a love song to the underground, to celebrate all the underdogs of music and how everything can lift you up and take you to great places.” We couldn’t agree more.

How Coins Are Made

How Coins Are Made

While the use of physical currency continues to dwindle, there’s still a need for coins to be produced. Process X takes us on an in-depth tour of Japan’s only coin factory for a look at how they make coins. The Osaka mint produces six kinds of coins, from aluminum 1 yen coins to the copper, nickel, and zinc 500 yen coins shown in the video.

Driving on Tires Made from Nails

Driving on Tires Made from Nails

Garage 54 proves yet again that just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be done. This time, the Russian auto channel fabricated a set of tires made from thousands of individual nails, then fitted their Mercedes G-Wagen with them to see how it would handle. They provide good grip on snow and ice, but they gather more trash than a Katamari.

Piloting the Pedaalbeest

Piloting the Pedaalbeest

Taking inspiration from Theo Jansen’s legendary strandbeests, artists Aat Dirks and Ad Lakerveld created their own walking vehicle. Their Pedalbeest isn’t driven by the wind or motors; it runs entirely on pedal power. Replacing legs with wheels means it’s not exactly an efficient mode of transportation, and it requires its rider to pedal backward to go forward.
