Awesome Siberia

Siberian musical group Otyken performed their track Storm in the icy Krasnoyarsk Territory, home to the Chulyms indigenous people and the birthplace of members of the band. The song mixes traditional and modern sounds – including some wicked throat singing – and is about challenges people face when traveling to the East.

We’re based in Chicago, so we know a thing or two about cold winters. But we’ve never experienced anything like Yakutsk, Siberia, which has recorded a low temperature of -96°F (71°C). Discover With Cenet takes us on a trip to this frigid city, which is home to over 300,000 residents, and contends with some unique challenges due to the cold.

From a distance, Siberia’s Vitim bridge doesn’t look so bad. But once Martin Remiš’ camera gets in close, we see just how iffy the one-lane river crossing looks, with its rickety wood planks and lack of any railings. This snowy bridge they crossed doesn’t look much better.
