Awesome Mystery

Steven Spielberg reboots his late-1980s anthology series with a new run on Apple TV+. Like the original, it will combine science fiction, horror, and fantasy, with a slightly lighter and more magical touch than Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. Premieres 3/6/2020 with an initial run of five episodes.

Based on Susanna Jones’ mystery novel, this disquieting thriller takes place in 1989 Toyko, where a troubled young expat and a local photographer connect, and their relationship takes a dark turn when a woman they befriend suddenly goes missing, and is presumed dead. In theaters 11/1/19, and on Netflix 11/15/19.

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson star in this highly atmospheric black and white film about two lighthouse keepers on a remote New England island in the 1890s. Robert Eggers’ latest film looks about as dark and mysterious as can be.

Adam Butcher’s Internet Story is a rather chilling, well-written tale about a treasure hunt in Britain based on The Pardoner’s Tale that leads to a mysterious murder. (Thanks, James!)
