Awesome Magazines

Tattoo artist Allan Graves created this awesome series of zines celebrating horror illustrations and advertising from the 1970s and 1980s. Each issue has 100 pages packed with gruesome and graphic imagery that is definitely not for kids. Monsterama #4 hits 8.30.2023, and you can grab the first three issues here.

Illustrator Chet Phillips created this series of 11″x 14″ signed prints inspired by vintage Modern Mechanix magazine covers. Each of his imaginative Modern Machines and Inventions covers features a reimagined version of an iconic vehicle or spaceship from pop culture. We can’t decide if we like the Back to the Future or Firefly design the best.

The Internet Archive’s ever-growing collection includes an amazing catalog of beautifully-scanned pulp magazines from throughout the 20th century. Among the classic low-budget publications are classics like Amazing Stories, IF Magazine, Weird Tales, and many more. (Warning: Link includes NSFW content.)

Netflix for magazines. Magzter’s Gold subscription lets you read thousands of local and international magazines, including past issues, on iOS or Android devices. It has offline reading, bookmarking and parental controls.

Popular Mechanics crosses over to the digital side and succeeds. Their interactive magazine for the iPad is off to a stellar start – as of this writing, it’s rated 4.5 stars overall from 103 ratings.

If you liked Sports Illustrated’s tablet magazine concept, you’ll be happy to know that Wired, our favorite geeky magazine, also plans to go tablet; note that this is an Adobe AIR app.
