Awesome Lawnmowers

The gang from How Ridiculous has been launching bowling balls out of a cannon to see how much destruction they can cause. In this video, they wanted to test what would happen if they attached stuff to those projectiles and fired them. After attempting to pull-start a lawnmower with a bowling ball, they moved on to piercing things with giant arrows.

Because maker Allen Pan knows no bounds when it comes to engineering stupid things, he thought it might be fun to mow his lawn with lasers. After experimenting with a spinning blue laser rig, he moved on to a grid-style design with multiple lasers. We imagine that it fries some bugs while it’s cutting the grass.

The Mowrator S1 lawnmower can be operated remotely while you sit in your lounge chair. It mows perfectly straight lines with its cruise control feature and dumps clippings hands-free. It’s also got a vacuum for sucking up leaves, and the AWD model can drive on steep inclines. Its rechargeable battery pack can mow up to 1.125 acres per charge.

Matt Thompson loves to build things to make life in and around his house more convenient. Among his many creative inventions is this lawnmower tray which lets him snack, enjoy a cold beverage, and watch the game while cutting the grass. He’s also made a version for his treadmill.

There are a number of robotic lawnmowers on the market, but rctestflight wanted something more modern than spinning blades to cut his grass. So he set out to build a lawnmower robot with a 40-watt cutting laser in place of a blade. It works quite slowly though, and his drone motor lawnmower seems more effective.

There are a number of legitimate robot lawnmowers on the market today, but none are as quite as exciting as the one that I Did a Thing built for himself. Instead of navigating on its own, this robot features an FPV remote control setup, and it looks terrifying. We cringed every time we saw him walking near it without shoes on.

In this clip from blacksmith Green Beetle, he walks us through the process of creating one by recycling steel found in a rusty old push-handle lawnmower. It’s interesting to see how he determines the carbon content of the steel on the grinder.

Colin Furze has made so much insane stuff over the years, we’ve lost count. His latest build is a lawnmower that’s powered by wood. It converts the vapors produced by burning timber into fuel for a regular engine through a process called gasification. It’s impractical and over-engineered, but that’s why we love Colin.

Stuck home with some time on his hands, Jason Hibbs of Bourbon Moth Woodworking figured his lawnmower could use an upgrade. So he got to building a wooden frame and boxed in the ride-on machine with plywood, then painted it all to look like a tank. It can even fire potatoes from its gun while it cuts the grass.
