The Hydraulic Press Channel tried something they’ve never done before. They placed the business end of a 40-ton press inside of an aquarium, then smooshed a soda can and some bottles to see how they would behave underwater. Their new slow-mo camera produced some nice high-quality images of the explosions.

London-based candle maker CENT.LDN painstakingly handcrafts these detailed boombox replicas in candle form. The candle is modeled on the iconic JVC RC M90 boombox, featured on LL Cool J’s Radio album cover as well as by the Beastie Boys. It measures appx. 11″ w x 5.5″ h x 2.6″ d and features a triple wick design.

Animator Jared Owen has dissected the inner workings of everything from the Space Shuttle to the Enigma Machine. This time, he delves into something less complicated – the Playskool Poppin’ Pals toy you might have played with when you were a tot. It might not be rocket science, but it’s still some neat engineering.

Skeyntific shows off a robotic factory line he built that first pours dough for each cupcake, moves it into a modified microwave for cooking, then applies toppings using motorized caulking guns.

Giant water lilies are as aggressive as they look. They clear the way for growth by crowding out other plants with their spiky, club-like buds, then blocking light beneath the surface with their enormous leaves. This footage from BBC Earth’s The Green Planet provides an up-close look at these plants which can grow 8″ a day.

Marvelous Media Engine created this awesome animated music box based on the Catbus from Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro. What’s even more impressive about this is that it’s all CGI, using Blender3D and other CG animation software to pull off the photorealistic look of the zoetrope.

IKEA is now making home accessories using a 3D printing technique known as selective laser sintering. The collection includes wireframe models of heads and hands, which can be hung on the wall or placed on a tabletop. They’re currently only available from IKEA Germany, but we hope to see them elsewhere soon.
