Awesome Zoetropes

Musical Cake Zoetrope

Musical Cake Zoetrope

Alexandre Dubosc’s chocolatey creation is an edible work of art covered with images from the world of music, including notes on a staff, piano keys, and sonic waveforms that all come to life when spun in front a properly synced camera or strobe light. The towering treat is topped by a tuning fork.

Artist Akinori Goto came up with a truly wonderful take on the zoetrope. He uses 3D printing to turn 2D frames into a donut-shaped object. It looks like an abstract sculpture, but it reveals its animation when hit with a narrow beam of light.

Artist Kenny Sing of Turn Studio first mapped out a series of geometric patterns on his computer, then carefully cut them out from a ceramic bowl before firing it. Once completed, spinning the piece on a potter’s wheel creates the illusion of movement.

Gâteau Gato

Gâteau Gato

Artist and pastry chef Alexandre Dubosc’s delicious looking cake doubles as a zoetrope, so as it spins, it reveals animated scenes of various feline friends, including Felix the Cat, Maneki-neko, and Catbus. (Thanks Rachel!)

4-Mation Zoetrope

4-Mation Zoetrope

A zoetrope machine that plays 3D-printed animations by spinning them on a disc in front of an array of LED strobe lights. The machine will offer interchangeable animation plates you can print like the fish-eating-fish and jumping frogs shown here. Coming to Kickstarter.
