Photographer Marc Szeglat was recording footage of the Japanese volcano Sakurajima when he captured a rare and unusual static electricity phenomenon – volcanic lightning, otherwise known as a dirty thunderstorm.

Photographer Kawika Singson likes to get up close and personal with volcanoes. In fact, he gets so close sometimes that his shoes have caught fire. Though these particular flames were apparently staged by his pal Chris Hirata.
Despite a temperature of over 1500°F under its moving crust, this man has the cojones to walk quickly across the surface of this smoldering lava flow. At least he had shoes on, but we’re still surprised those survived.
