Awesome Toto

We’ve all heard a billion and one covers of Toto’s Africa by now. Though we have to hand it to Kestrel Tapes for his unique spin on the hit song. Played in a minor key, and accompanied by salad tongs, the track takes on a creepy new vibe that sounds like it came from a horror movie soundtrack.

While Kaboom Percussion seems perfectly capable of playing songs without such trickery, they decided to skip a traditional performance for this clip, instead recording each note of Toto’s Africa individually, then chopping it all together in video editing software.

The Los Angeles’ Angel City Chorale starts out with an impressively real sounding rainstorm, created entirely by its musicians, then segues into an larger-than-life version of the ubiquitous Toto hit Africa. Lest you think they’re just seizing on a trend, they did this back in 2013.

We’ve already heard Weezer cover Toto’s 1982 hit Africa, and now we have an official music video. But Weezer is nowhere to be seen. Instead, “Weird Al” Yankovic stands in for Rivers Cuomo, lip syncing lead vocals, while poking fun at Undone – The Sweater Song.

After Weezer’s massively popular cover version of Toto’s Africa, the 1980s pop group decided to return the volley, with a very solid rendition of Weezer’s track Hash Pipe during a performance in Vancouver, BC. Weezer, it’s your turn. We suggest Rosanna.

We’ve heard a few interesting cover versions of Toto’s Africa, but we’re particularly enamored of the jangly and twangy country sounds of Doug and Cletus as their band turns in a catchy bluegrass arrangement of the 1982 pop hit.

Musician Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios turns in another fantastic heavy metal cover version – this time putting a razor-sharpened edge on the 1982 Toto pop hit Africa. This time, he’s joined by vocalist Hannah Boulton and guitarist Rabea Massaad.
