Inspired by the torpedoes on a submarine, electrosync wanted to see if he could make a tiny version to launch in a swimming pool. He designed 3D-printed shells for the mini torpedoes and powered them with CO2 cartridges. A spring mechanism gives them an initial push. Grab the STL files for free on Thangs.com. (Thanks, Bruce!)
Awesome Swimming Pools
An olympic-sized pool doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you can just add to a stadium. But in 2012, Omaha’s CenturyLink Center (now the CHI Health Center Arena) enlisted Myrtha Pools to install a massive pool to support the U.S. Olympic Trials. This time-lapse video compresses the entire process down to less than 45 seconds.
Part of Bote Board’s awesome Hangout Suite, this pool lounger is like a floating Adirondack chair. Its PVC sling keeps your butt submerged to keep you cool while keeping your upper half in the sun, and its padded back can recline. Its wide arms are covered with rigid boards, and include a Magnepod drink holder.
When it comes to inflatable pools, we try to keep water inside the pool to avoid refilling them for as long as possible. But this guy doesn’t care if he loses a little H2O. Using his body, a pool float, and his knowledge of fluid dynamics, he makes the surrounding water bend to his whim.
As part of the 2022 Aberdeen Jazz Festival in Scotland, musician Michael Owers performed on trombone in the empty Bon Accord Baths, and the wonderful echoes that it produced are everything you could hope for. It turns out that strings also sound amazing in the same setting, as violinist Victoria Field demonstrated.
This family-friendly resort in Guangdong, China has a unique water feature – a massive swimming pool that connects the yards of its numerous villas. It’s basically a manmade, chlorinated river. You can book a villa at the Baodun Lake Hushan Hot Spring Resort on Trip.com.
One of the challenges with swimming pools is what to do when you’re done with them for the day. You could put a pool cover over the top, or you could do what Sons of Metallerie did, and build an entire outdoor lounge that slides over the pool when it’s not in use. Here’s the view from the seats.
Celebrate the lazy days of summer with this wristwatch from Mr. Jones Watches and illustrator Kristof Devos. It features an innertube hour hand, and a rubber ducky minute hand, both floating in a swimming pool. Drops 7/4/19 at 12pm (GMT) / 7am (Central). The idea of filling a swimming pool with gelatin seems simple enough, but as engineer Mark Rober explains, it’s way more complicated than you might think. Leave it to a rocket scientist to figure out how to boil and then refrigerate an entire pool filled with 15 tons of Jello.
