Awesome Snow

Making a snowman is a fun winter pastime. Still, there’s very little in common between a snow-man and a hu-man. Comedian Ryan George illustrates that point in his sketch about what must have been going through the mind of the first guy ever to build a snowman.

Half-Asleep Chris created this wonderful LEGO railroad which winds through a snowy winter scene. The indoor-outdoor ride takes the tiny train through a gingerbread village, an ice cave, a spinning storybook tunnel, and a giant snow globe made from a geodesic dome. The journey starts around the 7-minute mark.

Skiers Verneri Hannula, Ilkka Hannula, and Juho Kilkki headed to Finland’s Havumäki Ranch, where they found heaps of fluffy powder and shushed through acres of snow-capped evergreens. Reindeer have been known to walk together in a circular formation in order to fend off predators and to protect their herd. This incredible aerial footage of hundreds of swirling deer was captured by filmmaker Andrei Golovnev on Russia’s Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle.

Freestyle skier Markus Eder takes us on a journey through powdery, icy, and downright daring downhill runs through various Alpine terrain. Watch Eder conquer steep slopes, slick surfaces, and ice caves while pulling awe-inspiring tricks. This epic ski film was captured by Innsbruck’s Legs of Steel over the course of two years.

Artist Scott Wilcock creates his freehand Snow Graffiti by spraying cans of fake snow onto windows. Watch as he creates a series of Halloween and horror-themed portraits, inspired by Edward Scissorhands, Hocus Pocus, and IT. Find more of Scott’s images on Instagram. During the winter, whitewater kayaker Aniol Serrasolses took his one-man boat to the summit of a Chilean volcano, then rode it down the snowy slope – descending from its peak on the powder at speeds up to 100 km/h, or about 62 mph. If that’s not enough, he hit the rapids and pulled a double-kickflip maneuver at the bottom.

Filmmaker Joerg Daiber has taken us to some exotic places through his Little Big World series. But during the pandemic he stayed closer to home, capturing amazing footage around Germany, including the snow-capped trees, medieval castles, and vintage railroads of the Erzgebirge, also known as the Ore Mountains.

In 2019, mountain bike rider Kilian Bron won the Mountain of Hell run, and shared POV footage of the insane enduro race. Bron took home the title yet again in 2021, and posted a fresh video of this year’s run. On his way down the grueling 15.5 mile downhill course, he achieved speeds as high as 62 mph.

Snow and longboarding aren’t two words you often hear in the same sentence. But when deep snow gave way to a freshly-plowed road in Timmelsjoch, Austria, Johanna Bolanos Cabrera and Jasmijn Hanegraef took the opportunity to enjoy the scenery on the way down the twisty mountain pass. Chris Benchetler shows us green run amateurs what we’re missing out on with this amazing POV of his line at California’s Mammoth Mountain. Watch as he winds through precariously tight rock formations, then catches air performing flips and spins on his quick trip to the bottom.

’80s kids might remember an Atari arcade game called Klax, a puzzle game where bricks dropped down the screen sort of like Tetris. Boing Boing’s Rob Beschizza thinks this house remembers the game too, as it satisfyingly drops snow off its roof in perfect brick-shaped pieces.

Grind Hard Plumbing Co. continues to upgrade and retrofit their insane 100hp Power Wheels Jeep. For extra winter fun, they swapped out its tires and replaced them with Camso UTV tracks that can tear through snow like it’s nothing. Though they don’t seem to be the most durable things.

Covering sidewalks and driveways with salt in the wintertime can be a pain. Sure, there are salt spreading machines out there, but how many of them can fly? FliteTest created an over-engineered solution which uses a powerful drone to lift a hopper of salt into the air, then spits it onto the ground below.

This video wins the “wait for it” award of the month. After a number of attempts to nudge the massive pile of snow on this building’s roof, it seems as if it’s not going to budge. But patience pays off around the 55-second mark when the snow decides it’s had enough.

In the earliest days of moving pictures, filmmaking pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumière captured footage of a serious snowball throwdown on a city street. More recently, not.bw restored the original footage, bringing out detail and colorizing the wintry scene. Man, they really nailed that dude on the bicycle.

The Union Glacier Camp is a private camping facility in Antarctica. It sets up each year to operate from November to January – aka Antarctic summer. Studiocanoe takes us on a lighthearted tour of the isolated camp, which provides shelter from the frigid temperatures, and acts as a hub for expeditions in the area.

We’ve featured of skateboarding, snowboarding, and even a few cat videos over the years. But this is the first time we can recall seeing a video that combines all three. Smagical’s kitty Taddy loves to take a ride in the snow, and he’s got just the music video to go with his extreme winter sports.

Skier and filmmaker Philipp Klein was preparing to go on a trip to the mountains when shelter-in-place orders hit his country. But instead of complaining, he decided to do some freeride skiing right in his living room, with the help of some props and stop-motion to capture the snowy action.

There are many legendary motorsports events in the world, but most are out of reach for the average person. To run the Baja 1000 or the Dakar rally requires a pro-level team. But there’s one event that can lay claim to the title of Most Extreme Driving Event, and pretty much anyone can do it. That event is the Alcan 5000 Rally.

Skier Sammy Carlson, CK9 Studios, and Monster Energy present a fantastic short film for snow lovers. It’s packed with footage of Carlson ripping up the backcountry through massive piles of unspoiled powder, and pulling off some epic jumps along the way as he makes his way down the mountainside.

We headed to snowy Winter Park, Colorado with Rocky Mountain Redline to put AWD cars from Nissan, Dodge, FIAT, Acura, for some Honda through their paces for snowy autocross, drag racing, and donut-making fun. There were no winners or losers, just six great cars and crossovers, all of which can handle inclimate weather with aplomb.

A while back, we checked out Grind Hard Plumbing Co.’s awesome amped-up Barbie Power Wheels Jeep aka “Cinderella.” They recently rebuilt its 50 horsepower engine from head to toe, tightened up the steering, and took it out for some frolicking in the snow.
