Awesome Skateboarding

The skateboarding video games that started it all are getting an ultra-high-def remaster for today’s gaming systems. The bundle of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 will offer up to 4K graphics on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Apparently they were able to preserve most of the awesome original soundtrack as well. We’ve featured of skateboarding, snowboarding, and even a few cat videos over the years. But this is the first time we can recall seeing a video that combines all three. Smagical’s kitty Taddy loves to take a ride in the snow, and he’s got just the music video to go with his extreme winter sports.

Filmmaker Mike McKinlay’s documentary short film follows the story of Marty, an 11-year-old kid who’s obsessed with skateboarding and ’70s and ’80s punk rock. The film does a great job capturing the spirit of something we all craved as kids, our own unique identities. Though a real ’80s skate punk wouldn’t wear a helmet.

Red Bull Skateboarding presents a short clip which combines athleticism with visual trickery to play with our perceptions. All of the illusions we created in camera by using custom-built set pieces, and no post-production effects. Stick around for a behind-the-scenes explanation with director Gaston Francisco.

adidas Skateboarding teamed up with pro boarder Jason Dill to create a pair of everyday sneakers that resemble Italian snakeskin leather. Despite their lazy loafer inspiration, they’re totally good for skating with their low-profile shape, molded sockliner, and rubber outsole. Drops 3/14/20.

This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a skateboarder do a 360º loop de loop, but we’ve never seen it done on a loop nearly this tight. Boarder Simon Isaksson pulled off the daunting task after a seemingly endless stream of failed attempts.

Isamu Yamamoto may be just 15 years old as of this writing, but he’s one of the world’s best freestyle skateboarders, having won the World Round-Up Freestyle Skateboarding Championships in 2017 and 2018. Kuma Films spent a couple of days in Otsu, Japan with the talented kid, where he showed off a few of his sick moves.

Felipe Nunes is a double amputee, but that doesn’t hold him back from his love for skateboarding. In this clip from RIDE Channel, Felipe goes up against his nemesis – a 360º loop he’s been trying to conquer for some time. With the help of some friends and a longer starting ramp, he was able to pull off the dangerous stunt.

While the only moving parts on most skateboards are the trucks and wheels, Matt Tomasello wanted something more complex. So he set about building some wacky skateboards which can change form as he jumps off and back onto them. Matt shows off his wares and his trick skills in this compilation video from JENKEM.

Riding a skateboard downhill can be a thrill – at least until you have to stop. Now imagine bombing down a mountain road at speeds faster than cars take the same path. That’s exactly what boarder Josh Neuman did down one of Switzerland’s most epic driving roads. Bonus points for cameraman @jake_from_skatefarm.

(PG-13: Language) The Wet ‘N’ Wild water park in Palm Springs, California recently closed down. Skateboarding magazine Thrasher managed to get permission from its new owner to let a group of overgrown skate punks – including the famed Tony Hawk – to ride the pipes, ramps, and rails of the park before it gets torn down.

This lighthearted game puts you in control of a little bird who’s learning to fly – on a skateboard. The tiny skatepark is made up of office supplies like staplers, scissors, and sticky notes, offering a fun place for our avian friends to take flight. Grab the Alpha demo version of the game here.

(PG-13: Language) From the director of Wolfpack comes a coming of age story told through the lens of a female skateboarder and her newfound friends. Skate Kitchen features the eponymous Manhattan-based all-girl skate crew, along with Jaden Smith.

(PG-13: Language) Academy award-nominated actor Jonah Hill makes his feature directorial debut with this gritty, minimal film about a young boy coming of age in the 1990s in Los Angeles, as he finds his place among a crew of skateboarders. Hill also wrote the original story.

Famed pro skateboarder Tony Hawk talks about his sources of inspiration, then performs 50 of the tricks he either created or perfected over the course of his illustrious career. Our joints ache just watching this. Keep closed captions on for trick names and years.

Session is an upcoming skateboarding game for Windows and Xbox One. Like Skate games, it makes you pull off tricks using a controller’s analog sticks. It will have a video editor and social media sharing, a rewind-and-replay system and more. Windows demo here.

YouTuber Roadie fabricated a nifty motorized skateboarding rig that allows its rider to glide efforlessly (if not exactly quickly) along railroad tracks. Needless to say, don’t try this idea at home unless you’re 100% certain the rails are abandoned like the ones shown here.

adidas and Palace Skateboards’ Palace Pro skate shoe is getting two new dope colorways named after British skaters. Benny Fairfax’s Palace Pro comes in off-white and mint blue, while Chewy Cannon’s colorway is black and mint green. Drops 11/17/17.

Herschel Supply Co. emblazoned the logo and slogan of skateboard truck maker Independent on some of its most popular products, including the Packable Duffle Bag and the Packable Daypack. Available in three colorways, and perfect for skateboard fanatics.

Athlete Jose Angeles took to the streets of San Francisco to combine two of his favorite activities – skateboarding and freerunning. So rather than having solid, stable ground to land on after his acrobatics, he’s landing on wheels.

adidas teamed up with skateboarder Lucas Puig and his homies at Hélas for a dope ’80s-themed collection. The highlights are a track jacket, track pants and shorts that are all made of nylon. The drop also includes an all-white variant of the Matchcourt skate shoe.
