His design relies on an old hard drive to create a persistence of vision illusion and can only display primitive text and numbers.

We recently got a look at Sean Hodgins’ unique (and dangerous) spinning Christmas tree that creates the impression of a tree using lights and a persistence of vision illusion. After fans asked him if it could be programmed to play DOOM, he posted this video demonstrating the tree’s ability to be used as a gaming display.

Most of us celebrated Christmas with a real tree or a store-bought fake one. Sean Hodgins made his tree out of light. He created the electronic tree using a triangular bar rigged with LEDs that spins at high speed to create the illusion. It looks amazing, but it’s dangerous enough that he stands behind a blast shield to use it.

Russian art collective TUNDRA teamed up with display company HOLO ONE to create this hypnotic artwork. It features a series of modular, scalable persistence of vision screens which display moving patterns that highlight and reflect the space in which they are installed. The piece made its debut in Shanghai, China in July 2020.
