Everyone and everything wears Mario’s hat in what could be the killer app for the Switch – a massive 3D platformer with the kind of creative level design, innovative and fun gameplay that harkens back to the all-time Nintendo classic Super Mario 64. Drops 10/27/17.
THE BEST Nintendo
Like TV makers, Nintendo is finally admitting defeat in the world of 3D content, and offering up a new version of their popular folding handheld, devoid of the eyeball-crossing 3D top screen. The 2DS XL does everything the 3DS XL does, minus the 3D bit. Drops 7/28/17 for $150.
Fans of Super Mario Bros. will immediately recognize this obnoxious bit of vegetation as a Piranha Plant. Jason from JK Brickworks brought the creature to life in mechanized LEGO form, complete with a motor drive to pop the plant up and down from a pipe as it chomps its jaws.
The NES Classic Mini was one of the hottest holiday gifts. But if Santa didn’t bring you one, you can still score one without having to dig into your pocket. Drop by The Awesomer Shop to win your own, along with an 8Bitdo wireless controller and Retro Receiver. (Ends 2/8/17)
We can’t imagine how many hours it took the guys from juggling troupe Synchronicity to create this stop-motion Super Mario Bros. tribute video, created entirely by rotating the faces of hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes. Though this isn’t exactly the first time they’ve done this.
Nintendo’s endless runner is as polished and innovative as other Mario games. Super Mario Run simple tap and hold mechanic is fresh and fun. It also has asynchronous multiplayer and a kingdom-building minigame. The initial stages are free, but it’s $10 to play the full game.
The NES Classic Edition’s controllers have inexplicably short cables. That’s why 8Bitdo came up with the Retro Receiver, a Bluetooth adapter and wireless NES-style controller for the tiny console. The adapter also works with the Wii Mote, Wii U Pro, PS3 & PS4 controllers.
We’ve heard plenty of cover versions of the music from Mario games, but Samuraiguitarist knocked it out of the park with this one, which not only perfectly lines up with the gameplay in the top left corner, but includes appropriate sound effects produced with his guitar.
