Awesome Night

These Time Warp jigsaw puzzles up the difficulty level by providing a different illustration on the box than what you’ll end up building. The trick is that the clue sheets and packaging show the scene during the daytime, but the puzzle takes place in the same location at night. There are currently five puzzle designs to choose from, each with 1000 pieces.

Volcanoes and the Northern Lights can be amazing to watch on their own. Associated Press shared this incredible footage of a volcano erupting in southwestern Iceland while the Aurora Borealis danced in the skies above. The contrast between the orange flames and the green and pink skies showcases the power and beauty of nature at the same time.

As part of the SKYGLOW project, filmmaker Gavin Heffernan captured this time-lapse footage in and around California’s Joshua Tree National Park. As the sun set over the desert, clouds rolled in, and the stars peeped out, creating an awe-inspiring light show during the recent Wolf Moon.

MTB rider and videographer Nikolaj Juhlsen takes us on a crazy-fast downhill ride illuminated only by the headlight on his bike. We’re guessing he’s practiced the run a few times in the daylight, given how flawlessly he performed the daring nighttime ride through the Austrian forest.

Ivresse Films shot this awesome promo spot for Decathlon ski and snowboard brand Wedze. Filmed in the wee hours at Saint Gervais Mont Blanc, they captured video of three skiers heading down the slopes with LED-wrapped skis and poles. We watched in amazement as BASE jumpers Espen Fadnes and Andreas Haaland Hemli jumped off of a mountain in Norway in the dark of night, then lit up their flight path with brilliant flares attached to their feet. We thought we were watching a missile launch.

Artist Yang Yongliang created this impressive short film that combines the light seen in cities with the stars in the sky. The full piece was designed for the MGM Cotai Theater’s massive 12 x 70-meter wraparound screen, so for maximum enjoyment, you’ll want to watch this video in full screen in a darkened room.

As part of the festivities at the 2020 Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival in Colorado, the pyrotechnics experts from Steamboat Fireworks bested the previous world record for largest firework shell by launching a 62-inch explosive package sky-high, illuminating the night skies for miles around.

This amazing 4K footage from High Pressure Aviation Films is the closest that most of us will ever get to landing a modern jumbo jet. The view from the cockpit of the Airbus A380 offers up a fantastic show of nighttime illumination outside, and digital displays inside.

A while back, Vincent Brady created an otherworldly time-lapse video featuring night skies captured via a special 4-camera rig. He since remastered the clip in 4K, added new effects, and improved its visual fidelity. Be sure to check out the 360º/VR companion piece.

Nico Vuignier and Jules Guarneri’s night skiing film is a visual masterpiece. It features amazing imagery which appear to be entirely lit by the orange glow of flares. It was shot without CGI, and looks like it was quite the shoot. (Thanks David!)

Spencer Frost’s short film is a love letter to the ocean and to nightime, as six surfers explain why they seek the waves off the East coast of Australia in the darkness rather than in the light of day. Best watched in a dark room with headphones on.

Photographer William Briscoe captured this awe-inspiring 8K 360º time-lapse footage of the super blue blood moon as the aurora borealis danced in the skies outside of Fairbanks, Alaska back on 1/31/18. Crank the resolution as high as you can, and scan the skies for the moon.

We can only imagine how amazing it is to paraski down the slopes in Chamonix. But Red Bull Speed Rider Valentin Delluc did that one better, by gliding over the powder in the darkness of night, illuminated by LED lights under his wing, and the full moon above.
