Awesome Mechs

MetaBallStudios offers a fun take on size comparison videos. By putting viewers in the body of a virtual human, we get to see how mechs might look roaming around Earth. They start with Emmet’s diminutive Constructo-o-Mech from The LEGO Movie and work their way up to the massive, city-stomping Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann.

Builder Handy Geng was worried about leaving his uncle alone to watch his workshop, so he did what any mad inventor would and built a mech to help guard the premises. It has caterpillar tracks like a tank, punching metal fists, and water guns which really should have been flamethrowers. English subtitles available.

Yeah, we know a spider has eight legs and not six, but Hacksmith’s rideable hexapod robot looks like a giant spider to us. It took a crazy amount of time and effort to create the massive mech, which they built from six excavators provided by Princess Auto. The year-long project served up a serious schooling in mechanical engineering.

Ghost in the Shell fans will recognize this spider-like mech as Tachikoma. The walker-roller tank turned up in the Stand Alone Complex universe, offering personnel transport and a mobile weapons platform. DanCreator built a giant cardboard version of the mech. Like his Scopedog, it’s big enough for him to ride inside of.

We never watched the anime Armored Trooper Votoms, but it looks pretty awesome. The main mech in the series was the ATM-09-ST Scopedog. Feeling inspired, maker DanCreator got to work building a cardboard replica of the mech’s cockpit that’s big enough for him to sit inside of. Now he needs to build a torso and legs.

What you’re looking at here isn’t a real robot, it’s a really impressive costume, built by artist XiaoQianFeng. She created the wearable mech outfit for her brother using wire mesh, paper mache, cardboard, wood, and if you can believe it, ceramic tile. The finished costume is too heavy to move around in, but it looks amazing.

Guinness World Records introduces us to animatronics and robotics expert Matt Denton, and his prize-winning walking robot, Mantis. This gigantic, diesel-powered hexapod weighs in at nearly 4200 pounds, and can stomp around while an operator rides in its mid-section. Matt also happens to be the co-creator of BB-8.

The Zenith wanzer from Square Enix’s mix and match mech video game series gets two new action figures. The Front Mission 1st Wander Arts Zenith comes in two camo colors. It comes with three weapons, two pairs of hands and two shields.

Inventor and builder Colin Furze teamed up with eBay for a crazy challenge – to construct a working replica of Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armor using only components purchased from the auction site. Not only did Colin succeed, he excelled. Build videos here and here.

New Gundam Breaker is an action game for Windows and PS4 where you play with living versions of Gunpla, or Gundam model kits. Collect parts as you battle and use them to build your own mech. You’ll also be able to swap parts while in battle. Drops 6/22/18.

King Art Games’ mechs-meets-1920s real-time strategy game is on Kickstarter. Iron Harvest promises gameplay that’s more tactics than twitch, engaging single player campaigns, and of course badass mechs and weapon systems. It’s coming to Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.

Iron Harvest is an upcoming real-time strategy game set in the same alternate early 20th century world as the excellent board game Scythe. Imagined by artist Jakub Rozalski, 1920+ is a timeline where three European factions wage war using primitive mechs.
