Awesome Foam

Inventor Colin Furze has been building out a new workshop. After receiving an enormous haul of Milwaukee power tools from PowerToolMate, Jonathan from Shadow Foam dropped by to create a custom tool organizer to hold them all. After that, he made custom drawer liners to organize a bunch of Colin’s Knipex hand tools.

Inspired by a Tech Ingredients video that claimed that a couple of pieces of foam board and inexpensive audio exciters were the “World’s Best Speakers,” AmplifyDIY decided to put the design to the test. It’s hard to know how they sound in person, but he certainly was impressed at the audio that $60 worth of parts can produce.

The TPC Louisiana golf course is home to numerous alligators. Among them is a three-legged beast nicknamed “Tripod.” Blake McFarland was commissioned by Zurich to immortalize the big guy. Like some of his other sculptures, he carved Tripod’s body from foam, cast a fiberglass shell, and covered it with recycled tires.

After building a couple of rocket-powered planes, James Whomsley from ProjectAir wanted to see how fast he could make a lightweight foam plane fly. After testing its speed with the off-the-shelf electric motor and upgrading its battery, he reworked its vertical stabilizer, and strapped on a rocket engine that could be triggered mid-flight.

The guys from FliteTest spend most of their time building and flying model aircraft. One of the materials they use to build flying machines is FT Maker Foam. Josh took some time out from flying to build a huge model of the Iron Giant out of the lightweight foam board. It ended up being much larger than he had initially planned.

Shadow Foam previously showed us how their thick foam could be used to make a tool organizer wall. Now they’ve teamed up with inventor Colin Furze to help outfit his awesome new workshop with an foam wall for storing his massive haul of Milwaukee power tools. We love this idea for getting big tools like saws up off the shelf.

M.C. Escher’s Relativity is one of the artist’s best-known works. Filled with paradoxical staircases, it’s a real head-scratcher. The Avid Creator went through the effort to replicate the illusion but in a 3-dimensional model. They made the structure from foam board and added details using balsa wood, wire, and clay.

The makers of the Shelby Destroyer set out to make the most durable, accurate, and fast foam disc blaster. Designed for hardcore players, the blaster fires up to 6 rounds per second with a velocity up to 160 feet per second. It has fully-automatic and semi-automatic modes, and its quick-reload magazines hold up to 120 discs.

After getting his hands on a foam cylinder that looks like a gigantic NERF dart, Ivan Miranda did what any enterprising geek would do, and built himself a weapon to launch his oversize ammo. He built his bazooka from PVC drain pipe, 3D-printed parts, rubber surgical tubing, and paracord to reset its plunger.

There are lots of ways to keep tools organized, but there’s something very satisfying about custom-cut foam dividers that hold tools perfectly in place. The guys at Shadow Foam make that kind of dense foam, and recently used a huge sheet of it to create an epic wall for mounting and organizing all their Makita power tools.
