Free: Auditorium
Auditorium is an intensely atmospheric musical instrument game with puzzle elements, with the payoff being a coherent piece of music; it’s best understood by simply playing it.

Despite its simple appearance, IncrediBots is surprisingly addictive: use three basic joints and shapes to build everything from Rube Goldberg machines and rag dolls to catapults.
Megalomaniacs can get their game on with Mastermind: the game lets you put your nefarious plans to work with minions and a secret base; too bad it’s not hidden within a volcano.
Take R-Type, mix it liberally with Dragonball Z and you’ll get Light Heroes, a side-scrolling shoot ’em up with a surprising amount of upgrades; warning: your clicking finger will hurt.
Mirror’s Edge 2D is a terrific side-scrolling version of the original game, although it’s limited to one stage. It takes getting used to but hang on to that S key for some glorious airtime.
Those of us still waiting for a true Master of Orion successor should check out StarBaron; it’s a space-themed RTS that isn’t too complex, making it ideal for a lunch break romp.
Quick Fire Pool does away with opponents and pits you against the timer; basically, pocket as many balls as you can in a given time, with extra time and points for special moves.
Playing Zompocalypse isn’t braaaiiinn surgery; this simple side scrolling shooter has you fending often overwhelming hordes of zombies; it even supports Xbox 360 wireless controllers.
99 Bricks looks like Tetris, but strips away the walls and adds basic physical laws to turn it into a teetering version of Jenga. As one commenter notes, it’s addictive but frustrating.
Deceptively simple, Bomba is definitely not for the jittery handed: this game maps movements precisely to your mouse, meaning even minor flicks of the wrist can end in instant death.
Okay, so we cheated to get the video above, but it doesn’t make Storm the House 3 any less fun: defend against endless waves of enemies using everything from missiles to space lasers.
Nile Online is an Egyptian empire builder by Tilted Mills; you’re in charge of a city which grows continuously, so it’s fun to check in every few hours to see how your empire is doing.
Zombie Baseball combines two American pastimes: baseball and beheading the undead. Rapunzel lofts pitches from above while you slug it out below, with bonus points for decapitation.
Physics Invader may not look like much at first, but it’s actually been coded to simulate physical laws, complete with falling debris that can block your shots (and act as impromptu shields).
Kings Island is basically a free online version of Diablo, down to the gothic fonts; the plot is a bit WTF (you’re supposed to battle farmers and farm girls) but it’s still nicely polished.
It’s been ages since we played Minesweeper on the PC; this free Flash version is a nice update, with a Wild West setting (of all places). Not revolutionary, but it’s a fun time waster.
Wooden Path reminds us of those sliding image puzzles we played with as a kid. It can be a bit frustrating, but the zen-like burbling water kept us from punching our monitor.
It takes awhile to load, but Dogfight 2 is worth the wait. This freebie by Rock Solid Arcade is a beautifully rendered WW1 biplane shooter, with 25 missions and bonuses for ace flying.
GemCraft is a fantasy-oriented Tower Defense game. Towers are upgraded with “gems” which can be mixed to increase potency; if you’re in a bind, lob ’em at enemies and they’ll explode.
Warlords: Heroes is a simple fantasy adventure game; decent graphics, leveling up of powers and three game modes gives this more staying power than most freebie games.
World Golf Tour is a beautifully rendered golfing sim, all the more amazing that it’s free and playable online. Based on the Bali Hai course in Vegas, it uses Google Earth-like tech.
With respect to our Japanese friends, Commando 2 is still a very fun, side-scrolling shooter. Packed with weapons and bosses, it’s set in World War II China during the occupation.
