Awesome Flags

CGP Grey has a thing for flags. In this video, he goes state-by-state through America to assess each flag and whether or not they succeed at some basic concepts like being simple, easy to identify from a distance, distinct from others, meaningful, and free from words. A surprising number of flags failed right off the bat.

While there have been flags associated with Antarctica, they have never been official. That’s because Antarctica isn’t a country. CGP Grey explains how this enormous land mass is dotted with scientific outposts representing numerous countries and how it ended up with its various flags over the years.

Filmmaker Daniel McKee selected over 2,000 flags from throughout the ages, and painstakingly arranged and edited them so they not only blend between related colors and imagery, but so they lined up perfectly with the music of Beethoven.

Redditor defenestrate_me_now combined the state flags of all NBA teams with their respective logos. Naturally some states got multiple versions, though that doesn’t mean much for Texas’ state flag. Flat versions here.

These creative photos of national flags made from food commonly associated with the country they represent were made to get the word out about the Sydney International Food Festival. They are mostly just making us hungry though.
