Awesome Fan Films

Animator and Calvin and Hobbes fan Joseph Conover created this CGI short film which imagines Calvin’s alien-fighting alter ego in a rich and fantastic science fiction world. It’s only the briefest of teases, but it makes us crave an entire Spaceman Spiff movie.

Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and its spin-off The Brak Show were two of our faves from the early days of Adult Swim. Saad Rahman (aka “Sad Ramen“) and April Son are fans too, and they created this eccentric follow up to the series in which the crew gets separated by space and time, leading to a web of intrigue and mystery.

With the world on lockdown, a Back to the Future fan recruited fellow fans from around the world to help create a remake of Back to the Future Part II, one scene at a time. In the end, over 300 people from 9 countries contributed to the charming and amusing film, which includes live action, animation, and puppetry.

Writer/Director Zane O’Gwin and Cinematographer Devin Supertramp created a truly impressive fan film from the Zelda universe. As the story unfolds, a battle lures our heroes into a tragic scenario, and Link must carry on into old age alone. Behind the scenes footage here.

Motion designer Sekani Solomon and a team of talented animators made this brief, but impressive Star Wars fan film, which features an epic battle between a group of stormtroopers and an unknown enemy. The CGI work is as good as any video game cutscene we’ve seen. Sound design by Echoic.

Animator Ian Wilkins is working on a new Star Wars-inspired series, a fan film project based on Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s beloved Dark Empire comics, in which Palpatine returns from the dead and Luke struggles with his dark side. The awesome music in the trailer comes from composer Daniel Ciurlizza.

Actor and Star Wars nerd Topher Grace and his pal Jeff Yorkes chopped up bits and pieces of all 10 Star Wars films into a single epic mega-trailer, following the full saga of Luke, Leia, Han, Anakin, Kylo, and Rey.

Set after Star Wars Episode 3, Vader is Star Wars Theory’s fan-made series about the transformation of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. In the first episode, Vader is sent on a mission to defeat a powerful Jedi while he’s still grieving from Padme’s death.

Following in the footsteps of Star Wars: Uncut, and Our Robocop Remake, 3GI Industries rounded up a group of over 200 fans, who each contributed their own scene to chop together into this line-for-line remake of Shrek. Also, the 3GI Industries website is priceless.

The debut trailer for Dark Phoenix was intriguing, but Darth Blender’s take on it looks way more exciting. They used scenes from the classic ’90s X-Men animated series, which did take on the Dark Phoenix saga. It’s a shame they didn’t use scenes from the actual battle.

Dmitry Grozov aka Ahriman made this awesome fan trailer for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in the style of ’70s anime, complete with Japanese dub. It’s not as smooth or sharp as OtaKing’s legendary TIE Fighter, but the jankiness only adds nostalgia.

Star Wars fan Brendan H. Banks and his friends created this well-paced short film about an Imperial scout trooper who finds himself lost on a forest planet where he ends up making an unlikely new friend. We’re surprised he didn’t run into any Ewoks out there.

(PG-13: Language) “Just like old times.” Nate and Sully pull off a risky double heist in the name of – what else? – treasure. Nathan Fillion stars as Uncharted‘s hero in this fun short film with all the trademarks of the video game series, including Nate’s godly luck.

A cast of 4th and 5th graders from Van Buren, Arkansas’ Parkland Elementary performed in this charming musical tribute to Star Trek, in which evil Klingons take the Easter Bunny hostage. Written, directed, and composed by teacher and Emmy winner Kevin Croxton.

“We hear your breath.” The teaser for the upcoming Venom movie left a lot of folks hanging. YouTuber BillyCrammer tried to fill in the gaps using footage from various films and series, wisely incorporating Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in his edit.

Rick and Morty fans will love this fan short film by David James Armsby, in which we find out more about the life of one of the endless stream of victims left in the wake of the multidimensional misadventures of the show’s main characters.

“We are told often as Omnics that a soul is what defines a being. But I do not exactly agree.” Ardy [SFM]’s animated Overwatch fan film involves a brief exchange between the troubled cyborg Genji and his master, the robot monk Zenyatta.

Pallette-Swap Ninja is celebrating the upcoming May the Fourth holiday in the best possible way, by releasing a free album comprised entirely of Star Wars parody songs, all done to the tune of songs from the Beatles’ famed record Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Jason Satterlund’s short film is one of the better Star Wars fan films we’ve seen. Focused more on character and emotion than effects, it follows the story of a Jedi who crash-lands on a desolate planet, and finds himself at the mercy of a Sith who has a vendetta against him.

“A LEGO Hind D?!” YouTuber Bearly Regal is recreating Metal Gear Solid‘s Shadow Moses Island in the sandbox game LEGO Worlds. Here’s what he has so far. It’s amazing how simply adding in the PlayStation boot sequence makes it so much better.

(PG-13, Gore) “It is growth, then decay, then transformation.” A group of fans spent a total of 2 years re-cutting Breaking Bad into a 2-hour movie. It’s not a highlight reel, but a re-configuring that even people who haven’t seen the series can appreciate.

(PG-13) A group of artists spent about a year making separate short videos to recreate The Vulture’s Prey, an episode from the 1967 Spider-Man TV series. There are all kinds of animation styles, as well as some live action, backed by the original’s cheesy dialogue.
