Awesome Etch-a-sketch

Drawing on an Etch-a-Sketch is challenging due to its simplistic horizontal and vertical control knobs. With the goal of presenting at the Open Sauce convention, Every Flavor of Robot put their thinking caps on, engineered a motor drive unit, and programmed it to draw uploaded images. All of the demos at the end are in real-time.

We’ve seen DOOM run on everything from a calculator to a toaster. But this is the first time we’ve seen the game on an Etch A Sketch. We’re impressed with lily-liver’s ability to replicate the game’s screen on the toy, even if he cheated a bit by tracing the diagonal lines.

Artist Jane Labowitch aka “Princess Etch-a-Sketch” creates intricate pop art portraits and scenes using those difficult to manipulate kids toys that we thought could only draw straight lines. You can buy the original, preserved works or prints in her Etsy shop.
