Awesome Drawings

Artist Chris Carlson takes to his chalkboard canvas once more – this time with a recreation of a classic video game. At first it doesn’t look that immersive, but look at the shadows around Chris’ and Ryu’s feet, and it seems as if he’s been dropped into the game.

Artist Howard Lee shows actual objects beside his photorealistic hand-drawn copies, then he breaks the illusion and gives us a glimpse at how he drew the copy. You can render his trick useless by pausing the video, but it’s still fun to watch.

We know pop artist Oskunk for his awesome video game console art. He also makes art you can hang on your walls. He draws pop culture icons, using hand-sketched words that are relevant to each character. Limited edition canvas originals available on BigCartel.

Joel Daniel Phillips lives in the Tenderloin in San Francisco and creates astounding life-size drawings of his fellow community members from charcoal and graphite, which you can view live at Hashimoto Contemporary from 9/6-9/27/14.

Brian Lai drew a couple of sketches of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but with a neat twist. Lai drew color negative sketches, which means his “actual” drawing will only be seen on an inverted photo of the sketch.

Jonathan Bréchignac makes large drawings of Muslim prayer carpets using ballpoint pens. It takes him up to 8 months to finish one drawing. Bréchignac told Fast Co. Design that it is his form of meditation; a way to empty his mind.

While we still ponder how we managed to draw a cube that one time in art class sophomore year, Chris Carlson impresses with this 3D chalk art time lapse of Donkey Kong versus Escher; bonus stop-motion scene included.

Artist Alessandro Diddi effectively uses light and shadow techniques along with cutouts and folds to create flat pencil illustrations that appear to jump from the page. No 3D glasses required.

David Jablow was given a doodle pad with each page containing a suggestive outline of a woman. Instead of feeling constrained, he took it as an opportunity to be creative. More here. He’s also selling some of the original sketches.

Young Eduard Taberner started his Sticky Man stop-motion animation project two years ago at age 15, and recently completed it. We admire his dedication and enjoy the simplicity and humor in his handmade drawings. Bravo.

Michael Birken made a software algorithm that creates pixel art while also being a form of pixel art unto itself. Using a modified version of Tetris, the algorithm draws images while actually playing the game. More here.

This might look like a photograph, but if you can believe it, it was actually drawn using 6 colored and 1 black BIC pen. It took attorney/artist Samuel Silva 30 hours to complete. More drawings here.

Artist Patrick Vale draws the view of the Manhattan skyline from the Empire State Building. It took Vale about 5 days on and off to finish the drawing. The song is Moanin’ by Charles Mingus.

Artist Gregory Euclide teaches high school by day. During his lunch break, he creates temporary paintings on whiteboard using sumi ink. Did we mention his break is only 25 minutes long?

This time-lapse of Mark Crilley sketching a perfect copy of a crumpled piece of paper in what he refers to as a “realism challenge” is just amazing. Turns out he’s a pretty good graphic novelist too.
