Awesome Donkey Kong

It’s always fun to hear our favorite albums played with video game sounds. FXSnowy took the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1991 smutty masterpiece Blood Sugar Sex Magik and covered it using the 16-bit sounds from the Super Nintendo games Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, and 3. The A capella group Maytree is really good at making mouth sounds. In this clip, they replicate the music and sound effects from Nintendo’s classic 8-bit arcade game, Donkey Kong. Though like many of us, they couldn’t make it past Level 1.

(PG-13: Language) Nintendo didn’t start making arcade games. The Japanese video game juggernaut made playing cards, toys, and board games for years before getting into arcade and console gaming. Inspired by a fan request, builder Studson Studio made a model of the treehouse, incorporating twigs, dirt, and rocks he found outside to add to the authenticity. The tiny bananas are a nice touch.

Vans dips into one of the bottomless wells of nostalgia with its upcoming Nintendo collection. Mario, Link and other classic Nintendo characters and icons will grace the Sk8-Hi, Old Skool, Authentic and Slip-On shoes this summer.

Illustrator Boggs Nicolas mashed up the worlds of Donkey Kong with Kung Fury to produce a t-shirt of epic ’80s proportions. We can only imagine that it’s bananas that give him has the strength to take down all those evil Nazis.

Redditor mrdvno – the mad genius behind Best Drops Ever – slowed down the vocal track from Grant Kirkhope’s DK Rap from Donkey Kong 64 and laid it over Daft Punk’s Da Funk. It sounds like John C. Reilly rapping.

Freddie Wong got together with Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’? to replicate technology found in the Donkey Kong Country franchise. Perhaps it’s the thick coat of gorilla fur that protects them from the explosive barrels in the game.

You’ll have to blow on the cartridge to start the game, but these pixel-perfect stop-motion animations of the first few levels of Donkey Kong by GuizDP are well worth the wait. The whole thing was made from melted Perler beads.
