See-through computer screens are a staple of sci-fi design. While they look really cool, they’re not the most practical way to view content. Still, makers Evan and Katelyn wanted to give it a try, set to building their own by modding a standard LCD screen, removing its LED backlight and polarizing filter, then building a new frame for it.

Sony has developed an intriguing new technology that allows viewers to look at 3-dimensional objects without the need for special glasses. While it’s too expensive for consumers, it could be useful for designers who want a realistic view of items they’re working on. The display is compatible with Unity and Unreal Engine content.

Vizio is now the third major player to offer televisions with OLED displays. These super-slim 4K screens offer incredible black levels and rich colors, and support various HDR formats. They come in 55″ and 65″ versions, and pack Vizio SmartCast for viewing content from hundreds of free TV channels and streaming apps.

Oculus goes all-in on wireless VR gaming with the latest version of its standalone Quest head-mounted display. Scientists from the University of Sussex are developing a method of displaying 3D tactile images using ultrasonic waves. The system works by levitating a small plastic bead and rapidly maneuvering it to create a persistence of vision effect. If they can move more dots or move them faster, they could create more complex images.

A slick new take on vintage Nixie tubes. The open-source Lixie display uses LED edge-lit acrylic sheets to display different digits. Unlike Nixies they can be any color, and don’t require high voltage to operate. Designer Connor Nishijima explains how it works.

One of Google’s lesser known products is this 55″ 4K digital whiteboard, designed to make brainstorming ideas across the globe easier, faster, and more fun. The Verge went hands on with this cool new collaboration tool. The initial software seems imperfect, but it’s still slick.

Charlie Peterson of StillLifewithCharlie handmakes these awesome tables and wall displays built out with dozens of individual shadowboxes. They’re designed to fit the classic Kenner Star Wars figures, but should hold any 3.75″-ish figure that fits into cubbies.
