Awesome Dark Comedy

Starring Raz Fritz, Ariel Martin, and the mighty Steven Ogg as the man pulling the strings.

(PG-13: Language) SkyCorp Home Video offers a politically-incorrect parody of 1990s training videos, with a lesson from Smithers O’Neil, an incel hellbent on making a love connection through AOL Instant Messenger. It’s filled with references to the early days of the Internet. Smithers also has tutorials on how to leave internet comments and how to write an email.

In this sci-fi short film, a young woman starts cheating on her app-arranged boyfriend with her home’s robotic assistant. When her parents sense that something is going on between them, they try to trade in the robot for a new model. Filmmaker Joe Picozzi’s Computer Love explores our growing reliance on technology for social interaction.

Bill Skarsgård stars in this bonkers action/dark-comedy about “Boy” – a man who seeks revenge after his family is murdered by an evil empire that publicly executes dissidents as a form of entertainment. H. Jon Benjamin (Bobs Burgers, Archer) plays Boy’s inner voice who drives our anti-hero to brutally dispense of his enemies. In theaters 4.26.24.

After a rat’s prized flower goes missing, his fellow woodland creatures join him on a hunt for the thief. But a case of mistaken identity leads to tragic consequences and proves the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Jorn Leeuwerink award-winning animated short film won numerous awards since its debut in 2017, but this is the first time we’ve seen it.

It’s something many of us have experienced – somebody at the table lies to the waitstaff and says it’s your birthday to get the free dessert. Stevie Emerson’s darkly-comedic sketch envisions what really happens to you if you get caught in your lie. It turns out the birthday song isn’t the only punishment.

(Gore) This darkly comedic horror film drops us into an insane world where a plant monster grows human houseplants. Filmmakers Benjamin Roberds and Katie Gregg of Dominar Films flip the script on the relationship between living organisms in this award-winning and unhinged short.

Filmmakers Dylan Bruno and Kasper Vejlø Kristensen cleverly use sound and off-screen action to build tension in their dark comedy short.

This award-winning short film takes place at the world’s worst telemarketing outfit – a place where lack of performance is met with severe punishment. Director and writer Sam Rudykoff’s dark comedy might actually have you feeling sympathy for the person on the other end of the line the next time you receive an unsolicited call.

Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) directed this genre-bending dark comedy about a man paralyzed by fear throughout his life. Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead character who must face his demons on a wild journey of self-discovery. The star-studded cast includes Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone.

(PG-13: Language/Gore) After a woman calls an exterminator for an apparent bedbug infestation, things get so much worse. But the bugs aren’t the only irritating thing in her life – a telemarketer is hounding her too. Daniel DelPurgatorio’s gross-out horror-comedy short film is a trip straight to Destination WTF.

(PG-13: Language/Gore) While running away from a battle, a soldier comes across a smart-mouthed rock that offers him a chance at immortality. But this darkly-humorous fantasy short film from writer/director Eron Sheean proves there’s a price to pay for everything.

(PG-13: Language/Gore) Any movie with the tagline “On a rampage for blow and blood” can’t be all bad, right? This dark comedy is inspired by the insane true story of a drug runner whose plane crashed in the woods of Georgia, and the bear that ingested an insane amount of coke after finding a duffel bag filled with the drug.

Filmmaker Steve Cutts animated short film explores one thing that’s been consistent throughout our existence – the need to have what others don’t – and the willingness to fight each other for it. It’s a grim, dark comedy that reminds us of moments from two Kubrick films: 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove.
