Awesome Crayons

These playful playing cards from Kings Wild Project feature a design inspired by a box of crayons. Their packaging looks like a vintage Crayola box, while the face cards and suit markers appear to have been colored in with crayons. The deck also includes a photorealistic card that looks like seven crayons to stack at the top of your deck.

We’ve seen how Crayola mass-produces crayons. The Nippon Rikagaku Kogyo factory in Japan has a more hands-on process and uses different materials, including rice wax and rice oil, to make its Kitpas bath crayons. Process X shows us how ingredients are combined into a thick paste, rolled smooth, then poured into forms before applying labels by hand.

After decades of highly-limited fleshtones, Crayola has embraced global diversity with a box of crayons which let kids choose from 24 different skin colors, so they can draw the faces of themselves and all of their friends with greater accuracy than ever. The 32-color box includes colors for hair and eyes as well.

Sculptor Steven Richter has a thing for melting his wax creations after he builds them. This time out, he decided to craft a bust of the Wicked Witch of the West out of crayons, then hit it with a heat gun to put the old bag out of her misery.

Borrowing a page from 3D printing pens, Crayola’s new gadget transforms unwrapped crayons into a thick wax “ink” that allows for smooth drawing on all kinds of surfaces, including wood, fabric, glass, and more. It can even blend wax colors. Drops 8/2018 for $25.

Builder Peter Brown melted together 256 Crayola crayons in a cake pan, then transformed the resulting block into a colorful flower vase using a drill press and a lathe. There’s something immensely satisfying about watching the waxy shavings go flying.
