Awesome Bernth

Playing a 109-String Guitar

Playing a 109-String Guitar

While it’s not as well-made as something by a luthier, Bernth’s homebrew harp guitar has more strings than we’ve ever seen on a string instrument. He cobbled it together from several smaller instruments and tuned them all differently to perform his track I’ll Still Miss You. We’re impressed that he can remember how all of the notes are arranged.

To create the music video for his original song Farewell, musician Bernth dove beneath the water with his guitar and performed the track while holding his breath for more than two minutes. It’s a beautiful and emotive track, and the studio recording really was performed with his guitar partially submerged in water to give it a dream-like quality.

Playing Metal Riffs on a Banjo

Playing Metal Riffs on a Banjo

A banjo is not typically associated with rock or heavy metal music. But it turns out that if you tune it to standard C and shred metal riffs on a 6-string banjo the same way you’d play an electric guitar, it’s possible to rock out on the country-bluegrass instrument. Guitarist Bernth shows us how it’s done.

Playing a Guitar with Rubber Band Strings

Playing a Guitar with Rubber Band Strings

Guitar strings are usually made from nylon or metal wire. Musician Bernth wanted to hear what an acoustic guitar might sound like when its strings are replaced with rubber bands. The low-frequencies sound more like a bass than a guitar, but they worked well enough that he recorded a song called Elasticity with them.
