Ash Thorp and XiaoLin “Zaoeyo” Zeng are huge fans of Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic anime, AKIRA, so they did what any superfans with the time and artistic talent would do, they created an eye-popping animated tribute to the film. It’s way too short, but still amazing.

The Nerdwriter takes a look at one of the greatest animated films of all time to look at how its creators hand-illuminated scenes in a way that created tremendous depth, richness, and a sense of place.

Akira fans are in for a treat with faithfully rendered 1:6 scale models of Kaneda and his bike; we’re most impressed by the latter, which sports LED lights, sound effects, and a working suspension.
