Awesome Action

It sounds like the title of a Tenacious D movie, but the first trailer for the fifth Indiana Jones movie looks pretty awesome. With director James Mangold at the helm (Logan, 3:10 to Yuma), expect incredible action and great storytelling. The main story unfolds in 1969, along with some de-aged flashback scenes. In theaters 6.30.23.

James Cameron goes all-in on CGI and 3D with the long-awaited sequel to Avatar. The Way of Water follows the continuing story of the Sully family as Jake, Neytiri, and their children battle to keep each other safe against a new series of threats from those who wish to exploit their world. Expect lots of underwater action this time.

Cyclist Fabio Wibmer combines his love for riding with video games in this amazing action film. After an accident sidelined Wibmer from riding, he respawned in the Côte d’Azur for this thrill-filled video shot like a third-person sandbox game. The filmmakers deserve equal credit for the exceptional camerawork.

The action RPG Black Myth: Wukong is looking even better than it’s first gameplay video. The environmental effects are truly impressive, but it’s the fighting and enemy design that has us really excited for this game, inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.

Idris Elba and Sharlto Copley star in this survival thriller about a family who goes on an African safari vacation, only to encounter the feline equivalent of Cujo. Will they evade the deadly lion’s claws, or will the beast prove it’s at the top of the food chain? Directed by Baltasar Kormakur (Everest, Adrift).

Despite an intentionally low frame rate, the animation in Olivier Lescot’s short film The Rift is impeccable, producing a great sense of movement through the use of motion blur and other visual techniques. Strap in for a brief but action-packed ride as a man finds himself chased into the night by a mysterious and heavily-armed crew.

This action-packed FPS from indie game studio Damage State promises “big guns and even bigger demons.” Your objective is simple: escape a maze filled with endless creatures and blow them all away. What would happen if three of the greatest adventurers came face-to-face in search of the same treasure? Devin Supertramp and crew headed to Uzbekistan to find out. This short action film stars stunt actors Braxton McAllister, Michaela McAllister, and Corbett McAllister as the heroes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Michelle Yeoh stars in this action sci-fi martial arts comedy about a seemingly ordinary woman pulled from her everyday life into an adventure to save the multiverse. We’re thinking this could be a good double feature with Big Trouble in Little China. In theaters 3.25.2022.

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg take on the characters Nathan Drake and Sully Sullivan in this big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog’s beloved PlayStation game series. Expect globetrotting action, adventure, and wise-cracking as they pursue “the greatest treasure never found.” In theaters 2.18.2021.

After a solar flare ravages civilization, a man finds himself alone in the world. As he wanders the Earth, he adopts a stray dog and builds a robotic companion. The trio then set out on a dangerous journey to find a new home. Tom Hanks stars as Finch, with director Miguel Sapochnik behind the camera. Coming to Apple TV+ 11.5.2021.

Longboarding down steep and twisty roads looks like quite the thrill. But it can also be quite dangerous. Boarder Josh Neuman compiled this video of 10 of his most butt-clenching downhill moments. The origin story for The King’s Man agency has been a long time coming, but we’re looking forward to seeing it when it finally hits theaters in December 2021.

The action-adventure RPG Black Myth: Wukong isn’t arriving until 2023, but it’s already looking incredible. Nicolas Cage gets top billing in this colorful samurai western about a criminal who is sprung from jail by a warlord and forced to rescue his runaway granddaughter. If he does not comply or attempts to flee, he’ll meet a terrible fate. We’ve got an Escape from New York meets The Road Warrior vibe going here.

For 1980s kids, Contra is one of the all-time classic video games. It recently got a reboot with the mobile game Contra Returns, and to celebrate, Devin Supertramp and company created a fun live-action sequence inspired by the run-and-gun shooter.
