Mat from UK channel Techmoan loves to dig up obscure old technology and examine it in depth. Here, he checks out an old 1970s tech from 3M and Ricoh which allowed audio to be recorded and played back from sheets of paper which were backed with a magnetic coating.

Kurzgesagt dusts off their 2013 video The History & Future of Everything and gives it a shiny coat of paint, with updated animations, and references to events of the last 5 years. Every time we hear about the Middle Ages, we feel much better about today’s problems.

Techmoan loves to collect and examine unusual bits of technology from our past. One of the more interesting gadgets he’s come across is the Nu-Spin – a single purpose device which generates random numbers and displays them on cool old gas-filled nixie tubes.

Kurzgesagt explains an economic idea called egoistic altriusm. It argues that it’s in an individual’s best interest for those around him to be well off. You’ll have more people capable of solving your problems, and more people able to afford the solutions you offer.

Primitive Technology tried to make a block of lime. His hardcore playground barely has any limestone, coral or sea shells, so he had to settle for a handful of empty snail shells. The lime can be used as a mortar for bricks and tiles.

Kurzgesagt explores string theory, and how it attempts to explain the nature of the universe. It’s supposed to solve the incompatibilities between quantum and gravitational physics by describing particles as “strings” rather than points. Yeah, we’re still confused.

“This figure skating sucks!” Comedy Central presents a spot-on lampoon of I, Tonya, in which Margot Robbie plays America’s most infamous Olympic curling athlete. The parody of the scene between Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt is priceless.

“Faith can move mountains, but sugar water can’t cure cancer.” Kurzgesagt explains the basics and origins of homeopathy. It’s often touted as an alternative to expensive treatments, even though it often does nothing except make you think it’s doing something.

Techmoan takes a look at another fascinating bit of retro technology, an alternative approach to portable audio tapes that was being developed by Sanyo at the same time that Philips was working on the cassette tape. We love the heft of that old player.

Kurzgesagt sums up the Great Filter – a possible answer to why we’ve never detected the presence of aliens. It could be something that prevents life from developing. Or something that ends civilizations before they have a chance to expand beyond their planet.

Esther Bellido’s animated short summary of Breaking Bad is more than a bit derivative of the work of 1A4 Studio, but we do have to hand it to her for summing up the core plot points for all five seasons of the series in just 77 seconds. Also, we want to play this as a side-scroller.
