Maker Peter Brown once made a handle for an ice cream scoop out of moldable thermoplastic, but it didn’t last. So he decided to retrofit his brass scoop with something more appropriate. He took a big batch of colorful sprinkles, submerged them in resin, then turned the block on a lathe to form the handle.
When it comes to barbecue, we like large meat. But maker W&M Levsha went and built a teensy oven that cooks the tiniest portions of food ever. They used a laser cutter to create the metal structure and skewers, then milled its handles out of a block of wood. We can’t help but think of playing foosball with the chicken, though.
Inventor and musician Nicolas Bras continues to expand his collection of unconventional musical instruments with a gizmo that looks like a guitar had a chunk taken out of it. Nic assembled a pair of bass guitar pickups and eight lengths of piano wire on a wooden block, resulting in a wonderfully weird and unique sound.
To prove how fast and durable the Kennametal HPR drill bit is, the guys from Titans of CNC: Academy programmed one of their machines to drill a perfect grid of 672 holes in a block of cast iron. The tool moves at an impressive 103 inches-per-minute, drilling 1.85″ deep holes over and over again without wearing down.
The UN Environment Programme introduces us to Nzambi Matee, a materials engineer based in Kenya, whose business Gjenge Makers creates low-cost construction materials. By heating and compressing waste plastic and sand, they form durable blocks which weigh half that of traditional clay bricks.
