Hot-Winding a Spring

We’ve seen how small springs are made by bending lengths of flexible wire. But it’s a bit trickier to create gigantic coil springs, a process which requires heating the steel to over 1600ºF, then bending the red hot metal around a thick rod as it’s wound at just the right angle.
