From the “unlikely covers” bin comes a remake of the 2009 Destiny’s Child hit Bills, Bills, Bills as performed by Brooklyn’s finest, They Might Be Giants. It’s a combination that makes no sense on paper, but works quite brilliantly in action.
Guitarist Miguel Rivera turns in an incredible acoustic rendition of Michael Jackson’s classic Beat It, finessing out wondrous rhythms and crazy harmonics along the way. You can download his originals over on Bandcamp.
(PG-13) The Strokes’ frontman teamed up with another set of talented and handsome bums. Seriously though, Julian Casablancas and The Voidz are legit, as evidenced by this epic noise rock single from their album Tyranny.
The incredibly talented a Capella vocalists of Pentatonix present a medley of hit songs spanning Michael Jackson’s expansive career, from I Want You Back to Thriller to You Are Not Alone.
Musical mashup makers Eclectic Method make it so with this tune, assembled from sound bytes from everyone’s favorite Starfleet Captain. We especially enjoyed the little chiptune tribute to The Next Generation’s theme song.
An unusual cover version of Queen’s classic Bohemian Rhapsody played on a 110-year-old Marenghi fairground organ, a mechanical instrument which plays music with pipes, percussion, and music recorded on punch cards.
The debut album from teen punk-folk musicians Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker. Girlpool are “twice as punk at half the volume.” The kids have a sincere rawness that only youth can provide, but with a control that belies their age.
The music video for Gener8ion and M.I.A.’s song The New International Sound Part 2 is made of clips from Dragon Girls, a documentary about three kids who enrolled in Shaolin Tagou, “the biggest fighting school for kids in China.”
Vocalist Maiya Sykes and Postmodern Jukebox turn in a soulful and emotionally-charged performance of Green Day’s hit Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Trust us when we say you’ve never heard it sung like this, and it’s great.
An absolutely brilliant, deconstructed acoustic arrangement of The Killers’ 2006 hit Read My Mind, as performed by Van McCann of Welsh indie rock group Catfish & The Bottlemen. The stumbly bit just added to the charm.
Musician Pensen Paletti demonstrates a nifty trick – his ability to play both his acoustic guitar and a small electronic drum controller at once, resulting in a complete one-man rhythm section. Hear another guit-drum tune here.
(PG-13 Language) While digging under some rocks, we stumbled onto this 2009 cover of Rage Against the Machine’s classic, performed by German swing revival band Musik for the Kitchen. Their Seven Nation Army is fun too.
Up-and-coming artist Jojee sings about giving in to forbidden love in this chill pop tune produced by Mickey Valen. If you like what you hear, keep an eye out for their album, which will be out later this year.
The guys from The Warp Zone, along with Peter Hollens turn in a pitch-perfect rendition of John Williams’ epic theme from the classic Jurassic Park. The only thing missing are the killer dinosaurs and that cool Ford Explorer.
The debut album of indie pop artist Bridie Monds-Watson, aka Soak. Her folk-inspired style has a wide range, and though the sound seems too clean for her whimpered words and youthful concerns, there’s still a lot to like here.
This year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival features Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, Run The Jewels and more. You can livestream the performances from 6/11 to 6/14 on Red Bull’s website and from the Red Bull TV app.

A band of animated puppets play soothing music while a sock puppet discusses the formation of positrons and electrons in a thunderstorm in the music video for Positronic, by electronic artist Ryan Mauskopf aka Professor Soap.
Beatmaker Mickey Valen adds just the right amount of edge and bass to Here, the hit anti-party anthem by this summer’s breakout YouTube star, 18-year-old Alessia Cara. Get the original song, uhm, here.
The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor JIMEK recently turned in this medley of classic hip hop tunes. We can’t decide if it it was more fun to hear Sure Shot or Get Ur Freak On played this way. (Thanks Michael!)
Declan Feeney likes to play the saxophone. Except he doesn’t actually own one. Instead, he does some crazy stuff with his vocal chords to create an uncanny mock sax. Here, he plays a bit of The Pink Panther theme.
