Awesome Zoetrope

While Corridor usually packs their videos with digital VFX, their latest clip was done entirely with in-camera effects. By dressing eight performers in identical garb, spinning them on a playground set, and time-lapse, they were able to create a dizzying real-life zoetrope.

Filmmaker Alexandre Dubosc loves to make animation using food. His latest work is a zoetrope formed out of a multiple-tiered cake. It shows a wacky cycle where corn kernels are turned into popcorn and back. Behind the scenes here.

Artist Elliot Schultz created a variety of machine-embroidered discs, each of which is covered with numerous still frames which create animations when spun on a record player under a strobe light. It’s music for the eyes.

A grim 3D printed sculpture and zoetrope inspired by Rubens’ Massacre of the Innocents. Sebastian Burdon spent over six months modeling and printing the zoetrope’s more than 350 pieces based on Mat Collishaw’s artwork.

Katy Beveridge wanted to know if it was possible to create a zoetrope-style animation effect and capture it on a rotating bicycle wheel as the bike is in motion. The answer: a resounding yes.

We’re fans of the cool animations which can be achieved by simply placing objects on a turntable and spinning them. Here we have an unusual set of zoetropes made from tasty eats (and matchsticks).

On display at this weekend’s Maker Faire 2011, Gary and Danny Aden’s zoetrope features 60 Android mascots spinning rapidly in front of a strobe light to give the impression of movement.
