Velcro and other similar fasteners are made using an interlocking pattern of tiny hooks and loops. Builder Kurahito wanted to see if the same technique could be applied to wood, allowing for two pieces to stick together without glue or other hardware. The results are mixed, but we can see the potential for this to work.

Toronto Blue Jays player turned artist Blake McFarland of BM Sculptures shows how he made an awesome sculpture of a bear by assembling various hardwood sticks and coated them clear epoxy resin. He used a chainsaw to cut the rough shapes and then smoothed out the design using a variety of handheld grinders and sanding tools.

Artist Olivier Gomis paid tribute to The Lord of the Rings by creating a larger-than-life replica of The One Ring. He started by assembling wedges of wood into circles and smoothed them on a lathe. He then carved its engravings and added curly maple veneers so its lettering only appears when its hidden LED lights are switched on.

Sinks are usually made from porcelain or metal, but builder Laura Kampf wanted something a little different to replace the beat-up old slop sink in her shop, so she created one by laminating scraps of plywood, then coating them with an ample dose of epoxy to make it watertight. Now she needs a proper backsplash.

Despite its name, Wood Trick’s unique wooden perpetual wall calendar actually can be used to track dates using the conventional Gregorian calendar we use today, but its design is inspired by Mayan culture. After carving a kid-sized wooden Bugatti Centodieci, ND Woodworking Art found an even more expensive vehicle to build – a working, scale replica of the world’s most valuable car, the Ferrari GTO 250. The wooden version appears to be somewhere between 1/2- and 3/4-scale of the real car.

Thanks to its layered structure, plywood is a strong and versatile material that costs less than hardwood boards. Carpenters often work to hide exposed plywood edges, but Michael Alm came up with a better solution – he created his own custom plywood with beautiful and intricate edge patterns which you’d never want to hide.

Back in 2008, Bridge City Tool Works posted this video showing off a fun use for their precision Jointmaker Pro table saw. By cutting numerous alternating notches into a stick of lumber, it turns into the wooden equivalent of a wet noodle. Woodworker Stumpy Nubs posted a more recent video showing how the tool works.

Artist Will Storey of Life in Layers makes incredibly detailed and deep works of art by layering together pieces of laser-cut wood. Between 1888 and 1913, Romeyn Beck Hough collected specimens of wood to create what would become the de facto standard for studying trees and wood. Taschen got their hands on a pristine copy of the 14 volume set, and photographed each sample for this 768 page book. A fantastic gift for any artist or woodworker.

Ben Paik of Woby Designs previously showed us how he turns old skateboard decks into usable lumber. Now the builder has gone completely meta by building colorful new skateboard decks out of wood gathered from 100 broken decks. That custom deck tape heater is a clever hack.

Budapest-based clock maker Ardeola created this clever wall clock that tells the time using a spiral. Woodworking Art continues to impress us with their hand-carved models of cars, trucks, and SUVs. Their latest sculpture is a detailed version of the luxurious, yet highly-capable Lexus GX 460. The part where they carved out the cabin was immensely satisfying, as was lathing the tires and carving the wheel rim pattern.

Artist Jerry Lo of WosinCraft makes these uniquely beautiful keyboard wrist rests from resin, colorful pigments, and wood. Designs include soothing scenes of mountains, galaxies, ocean waves, and other dreamlike places. The transparent areas allow lighting to shine through from edge-lit keyboards for even more impact.

Based in Tahoe Woods, California, Origin Artwork creates awesome laser-cut wall art with a tremendous amount of depth and dimension. Their designs feature topographic maps of real world locations, fictitious places, and the occasional video game screen.
