Awesome Night Vision

Typical night vision scopes display monochrome images in shades of green. Yashica has developed a scope that can display and record full-color video in the darkness of night. It also has a 3-level infrared illuminator to produce high-contrast black-and-white footage with a viewing distance of up to 1970 feet and a sensitivity of 0.0037 lux.

Night vision cameras shoot muddy green images. Action cameras do terribly in the dark. SiOnyx claims its action camera can shoot night scenes in full color. While its 720p resolution is barely hi-def, its jumbo-sized CMOS sensor makes twilight and low-light shooting possible.

When we think of night vision, dark and grainy monochrome footage comes to mind. But SPI shows us what modern technology can do. Believe it or not, these videos were taken in real-time at night. Give it a few years and we’ll be able to see John Cena.

Minox’s night vision NV line gets downsized in a good way: the NV mini II measures just 4.2″ x 1.6″ (about as large as lipstick) and offers 2x magnification and infrared illumination.
