Awesome Netherlands

Those of us from outside of The Netherlands are likely familiar with Amsterdam, but fewer of us know about Rotterdam. Photographer and world traveler Joerg Daiber takes us on an eye-popping, tilt-shifted journey to the cosmopolitan Dutch city to look at its unique architecture, waterways, and public spaces.

This unique bridge connects two districts in The Netherlands. Designed by West 8 and fabricated by HCG, the helical truss structure was fabricated from 400 steel tubes which twist a full 90 degrees from one end of the bridge to the other. It was originally painted red, but its current, more natural state also looks very cool.

Submarines are notorious for their incredibly close quarters, so you might not think it would be a good place to fly a drone. But with a talented pilot behind the controls, it is possible to negotiate the claustrophobic passageways, like in this video from the Royal Netherlands’ Navy’s 2020 Onderzeedienst Live event.

Nature photographer Marco Valk captured some incredible footage of starling murmurations in the sunset skies over Geldermasen in the Netherlands. The birds travel in massive flocks to provide safety from predators and warmth at night while at the same time offering humans one of the most spectacular shows on Earth.

Decades ago, Utrecht, The Netherlands, was like many others, clamoring for more roads for motor vehicles. Now, the city has started to reverse course, transforming streets into bike paths and walkways, and restoring the city’s moat, which had been used as a motorway. You’d think that cardboard wouldn’t be a great homebuilding material, but Fiction Factory says their tiny cardboard house is durable enough for permanent structures. The tiny house is assembled using layers of premium “goldboard” which is wrapped around a special mold, then covered with glue, a protective film, and wooden slats.
