Awesome Moog

The latest Moog theremin has a five-octave range and improved bass response. It can also be used as a pitch, volume, and gate controller for modular synthesizers. It has a hardwood cabinet and quick-release brass-plated antennas, and can produce some amazing sounds – as demonstrated by The Octopus Project.

The Mavis is a build-it-yourself analog synth kit that embodies the spirit of Moog. The compact instrument has a 24-point patch bay, an analog oscillator, a voltage-controlled filter, a 4-stage envelope generator, and a sample-and-hold circuit. It easily integrates with any Moog semi-modular or Eurorack system too.

At NYC’s MoMA, composer Dorit Chrysler used the movements of iconic Calder mobiles to control Theremins, musical instruments played without physical contact. As the metal sculptures moved, they produced sounds by affecting the electromagnetic fields of the Theremins, resulting in a musical “collaboration.”

Electronic music trailblazer Herb Deutsch invented the Moog synthesizer with Bob Moog. Their genius propelled synths into the mainstream, changing the sound of music forever. Deutsch tells all in episode one of the Giants documentary series, which invites legendary electronic music innovators to share their untold stories.

The latest creation from the analog synthesizer greats at Moog, the semi-modular DFAM (or Drummer from Another Mother) is designed specifically to create distinctive rhythmic sounds for use as the backbeat to electronic music tracks. Listen to sample tracks here.

While it’s a sound that owes a ton of credit to Stevie Wonder and Zapp & Roger, we have to say we’re extremely impressed with this funky demo of a talkbox with a Moog Little Phatty synth by Steveland Swatkins of Excellent Gentlemen.

Moog’s new analog synth has variable waveshape oscillators, a square wave sub ocillator, a noise generator and lots of ways to tweak them, including Moog’s classic ladder filter. Hear it in action at 4:30.
