Awesome Kaiju

Rugrats fans will recognize this green monster as Reptar, the goofy Godzilla from the long-running Nickelodeon series. Boutique pinball machine maker Spooky Pinball created this sweet limited-edition pinball machine inspired by the classic Japanese Kaiju series Ultraman. The machine is covered with awesome artwork, and has interactive elements inspired by a monster-filled Toyko. Sadly, all 500 of the machines have already been sold.

Godzilla vs. Kong is a big hit. But if you prefer your monster movies without so much CGI, check out Godzilla vs. Mito Komon, a fan film made by Shinya Takeshita back in 1991. What makes it so perfect is how the filmmaker played every one of the roles and made all of the sound effects and music with his mouth.

Godzilla’s titanic turtle counterpart, Gamera, gets some long overdue respect with an aptly ginormous box set of his film library. Gamera: The Complete Collection includes 12 movies in high-def with Japanese audio and English dub tracks, an 80-page retrospective book, a 130-page comic, poster, and art cards. Drops 8.18.20.

Looking for something to complement that Nozilla figure on your bookshelf? Illustrator Noger Chen and Black Seed Toys are back with another playful anthropomorphic kaiju. We love watching movies like Godzilla and Mothra and Ghidorah for their building-stomping monster action. But as Overly Sarcastic Productions points out, there’s way more depth to these films than just guys in lizard and moth costumes stepping on scale models of Tokyo.

A brief, but well-executed promo animation for the 2019 Festival International Du Film D’Animation d’Annecy. Students from the Gobelins animation school envision a world filled with guys in kaiju costumes stomping around a tiny Tokyo, slapping each other about in a monster-sized wrestling match.
