Awesome Illustrations

Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas teamed up with Marvel and Mike Mitchell to create a series of portraits of the House of Ideas’ heroes and villains. That Deadpool piece is going to sell out immediately. The exhibit runs til 5/17.

For his SkyArt series, illustrator Thomas Lamadieu takes photographs of the sky – or reflections of the sky – enclosed by buildings. He then fills in the space with funny illustrations that conform to the outline of the borders.

“It’s so insignificant, yet so monumental.” Photographer Vik Muniz and designer Marcelo Coelho worked for four years trying to etch microscopic castles on individual grains of sand. More on Marcelo’s website.

Artists Hari & Deepti create intricate illustrations by cutting and layering sheets of paper, then adding LED light. In plain white light, they’re ethereal, when illuminated, they’re magical. Watch them make a huge version here here.

Illustrator Darren Rawlings envisions what classic vehicles from movies and TV would look like if they were robots in disguise. The Ecto-1 and Mach V are pretty awesome, but the Mystery Machine is downright epic.

Prolific illustrator Jeff Victor has an ongoing series wherein he tracks the careers or progression of famous actors, musicians, fictional characters and directors. You can buy prints of some of the pieces from his online shop.

Simon Stålenhag loves to paint robots and futuristic structures sitting in otherwise normal suburbs and countrysides. They look like more peaceful versions of Borderlands’ Pandora. You can buy prints of his art on RedBubble.

Critically-acclaimed graphic artist Francesco Francavilla imagined what it would be like if superheroes joined the Winter Olympics. It must be awesome to be so talented that you can make beautiful art like these just for fun.

Have you ever considered owning a dinosaur? Illustrator and writer John Conway lays out the pros and cons of different dinosaurs as pets. Here’s a tip: stick to Hypsilophodon. Otherwise it’s not going to end well.

Larger prints of the illustrations in Josh Cooley’s pseudo-children’s book Movies R Fun! They’re signed by hand and come in 8.5″ x 11″ and limited edition 13″ x 19″ sizes. The red texts are just online watermarks and won’t be in the prints.

Martin Vargic and Jay Jason Simons are working on a funny but informative illustration that depicts the major players and websites on the Web as countries and continents. The poster also includes stats and other trivia.

(Gore) Animator Fran Krause’s webcomic about people’s irrational fears and concerns. Some of them are silly and would make your grandparents disown you, but a good number are legitimately frightening in different ways.

Artist Rebecca Yanovskaya drew these two pieces using ballpoint pens, gold leaf and shell gold. Ascent of Man and the Destruction of Magic and Descent of Man are part of her three-piece series Winged, with the third one coming soon.

deviantART member Unrellius has only a single artwork on his page, but he made it count. Unrellius spent around 14 months drawing this 5056 × 3576 poster, which he claims features all the characters that appeared in Futurama.

A wonderful series by comic book artist Mike Holmes (Bravest Warriors) in which he draws himself and his cat Ella in the style of different artists, cartoons and video games. He’s going to release a compilation soon.

A print of Brooklyn-based artist Calm the Ham’s hand-drawn illustrations of 71 cars popularized by movies and TV series, from Bonnie and Clyde’s ’34 Ford B-400 to Walt and Jessie’s ’86 Fleetwood Bounder.

Artist Tobias Gutmann travels around the world with his portrait-making booth. The cardboard booth has levers that people can move to indicate the style of their portrait, then Tobias draws it Face-o-mat prints it out. More here.

Dirk Loechel is working on a chart that compares the sizes of spaceships from various sci-fi series. The chart is already daunting and makes for an awesome wallpaper, but he’s far from finished. It barely has any ships from manga and anime.
