Netflix is all about streaming these days, but they started renting DVDs and shipping them by the US Post Office. On September 29, 2023, the company mailed its last physical disc, and director Felipe Lima created this wonderful short tribute to their DVD-by-mail business and the excitement we all felt whenever a new disc arrived in our mailboxes.

Kids today probably don’t even know what a CD or DVD is, but for a while, these were the best way to deliver music, movies, and games. Maker Nick Zammeti took advantage of the mirrored, prismatic discs, attaching hundreds of the shiny shards to a resin guitar body. It took a couple of tries, but the finished design came out great.

Time Life’s Robin Williams: Comic Genius contains over 50 hours of the late actor’s TV material spread across 22 DVDs. The videos include his HBO stand-up specials, Mork & Mindy, talk show appearances, never-released specials, and interviews with friends and family.

DC Comics‘ latest Batman animated movie is now available on digital, Blu-ray and DVD. Batman Ninja is a decidedly Japanese and anime-flavored take on the Caped Crusader, featuring various anime styles of imagery and over-the-top action sequences.

An excerpt from Game of Thrones Conquest & Rebellion, a 45-minute animated history of the major events in Westeros leading up to the HBO series. It will come in a bonus disc bundled with the Game of Thrones Season 7 Blu-ray and DVD.

(NSFW: Language) Riichiro Mashima revitalized horse racing arcade games in Japan with Japan World Cup, a nonsensical horse racing betting game that combines CG animation with bizarre comedy. More here and here.

If you missed this one, this inventive dark comedy features a great ensemble including Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, and a typically scene-stealing Sam Rockwell.

Jeremy Clarkson hits the Paul Ricard F1 test track in France to test some of the world’s most eclectic and beautiful cars. Also stars The Stig and F1 racer Karun Chandhok. The disc is Region 2 only, boo.

A miserable cubicle dweller discovers that he is the last living relative of H.P. Lovecraft, and that the monsters in the novelist’s books are actually real. Seems pretty fun for a straight-to-DVD flick.

Includes Blu-ray discs of the 3D and 2D versions, a DVD, and a code to download a digital copy of the game. A Blu-ray of the original Tron is also included. Limited edition package here.

Henry Selick’s meticulously crafted stop-motion film originally shipped with those stupid red/blue 3D glasses when it first hit disc. Now – if you’ve got a 3D TV – you can watch it the way it was meant.

Robert Rodriguez’ bloody good “Mexsploitation” flick finds its way to disc next week, complete with deleted scenes and an audience reaction track for added fun. And remember, Machete Don’t Text.

(NSFW) The consistently sick and twisted Archer is back for as second season on 1/27, and we can’t wait to laugh our asses off again. If you missed Season 1, now’s your chance to grab it on DVD.

Steve Carrell’s supervillian Gru gets help from three bonus short films starring his army of wacky Minions in this Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo pack. While it’s no Pixar flick, it’s still a crowdpleaser.

You’re probably too young to recall these surreal Saturday morning classics. Brush up with this sampler DVD with of gems like Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, H.R. Pufnstuf, and The Bugaloos.

Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, Rourke, Willis, Li and even the Governator himself blow the roof off the place in this blockbuster action flick. The 3-disc set is loaded with bonus footage and special features.

A no-nonsense aggregator of new media, When It Drops uses websites like Amazon and iTunes for info and buy links. You won’t find any hidden gems here, but we all have our guilty pleasures.

With the new season of the most warped (and funny) show on television upon us this Thursday (9/16), catch up with Sweet Dee and the boys with last season’s Blu-ray/DVD release.

The classic NASA documentary that chronicled the Apollo 11 launch and the adventurous America of the 1960s is now on YouTube. It’s 94 minutes-long though; you might want to get the DVD instead.
