Awesome David Bowie

Artist Takun Williams aka Technodrome1 created this wonderful tribute to musician David Bowie – his face bedecked with the artist’s trademark pop-art patterns which are especially relevant to Bowie’s chameleon-like abilities.

Wayne Coyne and gang play to a church filled with balloon audience members in the video for this David Bowie cover, which embraces the sort of enigmatic performance that itself would not exist if it weren’t for Bowie himself. A fitting tribute to the master of theatricality.

REM frontman Rip Van Winkle Michael Stipe dropped by The Tonight Show to turn in a haunting performance of the David Bowie’s 1970 classic in advance of The Music of David Bowie charity concert slated for NYC on 3/31 & 4/1/16. The 4/1 concert will be streamed live.

There’s no question the ethereal, theatrical, enigmatic style of The Flaming Lips owe quite a bit to the fertile ground sowed by David Bowie. At Belly Up, Aspen, they repaid the favor with an eight-song tribute to the Thin White Duke. We only wish we had a direct audio feed.

One of the more emotionally powerful David Bowie tributes we’ve heard, as Toronto’s open choir of more than 500 singers convened to perform a wonderful cover of Bowie’s 1969 classic. Their rendition of The Man Who Sold the World is excellent as well.

The extended version of Audi’s big Super Bowl 50 spot is a tribute to the space program, David Bowie, our elders, and awesome sports cars all in one, as a retired astronaut is lost until he gets a chance to drive Audi’s 205mph R8 supercar. Wouldn’t we all like that chance?

LA indie rockers Warpaint turn in a download-worthy rendition of David Bowie’s 1980 classic in a backstage performance during Glastonbury 2014. Fortunately, you can find the track on the 2010 tribute album We Were So Turned On.

Musicless music video master Mario Wienerroither pokes fun at the silly dance moves in Mick Jagger and David Bowie’s superfluous 1985 remake of Dancing in the Street. At least the video has some redeeming qualities now.

We enjoyed the version of Space Oddity that astronaut Chris Hadfield created; somehow, though, Mario and Fafa have made it even sweeter by including themselves – and a Rocket Man cover – in it. (Thanks John!)

In Jim Henson’s cult-classic Labyrinth, David Bowie likes to twiddle around his crystal orbs. But Bowie never played with his balls, it was juggler Michael Moschen manipulating them on his behalf. Balls.

Andrew Ruttan turned Andrew Kolb’s illustrated book of Bowie’s Space Oddity into an animated short, proving that Kolb’s book is bound to make children cry and not want to be an astronaut.
